Best Places to show in switzerland

HI, This may sound like the stupidest question but my family will be visiting me soon and I was wondering if you all can share the best places to go around in Switzerland with them. We will be travelling by car.

I asked a few people around and everyone seems to recommend Luzern , Mt. Titilis and Interlaken and even though I agree that they are all very pretty places, I think they are very touristy. I want to take them to some place which is more "Swiss" (like small towns) and not a city with lots of tourists.

Re: Best Places to show in switzerland

For Bond Fans (even George Lazenby), the Schilthorn (Piz Gloria) is Swiss enough to be interesting.
Can't guarantee there wont be other tourists, though.

Thanks . I've heard about schilthorn and its revolving restaurant, although i still haven't visited it. I guess its a good idea and will definitely try to include it in my itinerary.

Your location is blank- knowing where abouts you are located would help with sensible advice. Switzerland is small, but not that small. And also so depends on your tastes, whether you like to walk or not, etc.

Re: Best Places to show in switzerland

Hi Doodle,

I'd recommend Luzern (I live here and find it beautiful) however, as good alternatives to L. I suggest Bern: http://www.myswitzerland.com/en-ch/d...tion-bern.html
and Basel: http://www.myswitzerland.com/en-ch/d...l-region1.html

Re: Best Places to show in switzerland

I love Appenzellerland. Urnäsch is slightly less touristy than Appenzell but both have their charm.
Schellenursli country, Guarda in Unterengadin is very 'Swiss' too, especially if you have heard of him.

It helps if we know not only what your family enjoy doing but also the type of countryside they live in. If they live in beautiful hilly districts of England, they might not be so impressed by the Jura. If they come from a town they might love the loneliness (sometimes) of some of the higher hills there. Ballenberg gives an idea of housing and trades in many regions... Some folk just adore wandering round the old parts of Zürich, Bern or Basel.

Have fun.

I like to walk and live in Olten. The good thing about this place is its railway station and connectivity although i will like to travel by my car

Thanks for your input. We have always lived in cities and dont want to visit Zurich, Bern or Geneva but would like to see the countryside. Appenzel sounds fun.

Re: Best Places to show in switzerland

I often take people to the Berner Oberland. Lenk im Simmental for example. It is picture book Switzerland. Cows with bells. Cheese makers. Grumpy farmers. Alpine pastures (alps) Hikes and trails for all ages and states of fitness. Views of the Wildstrubel, glaciers, waterfalls and the like and a very good tourist office.
All reachable by Post-Auto.

Not cheap, but it leaves everyone breathless: Jungfraubahn.

I took people there 10 years ago and it's still the thing they most remember of ANY vacation.

Re: Best Places to show in switzerland

Just got back from my 5th trip to Zermatt, which is touristy and hideously expensive, but still one of the most beautifull places I've been to. This time I even saw an old age home and thought "hmm, maybe I should learn Walliser dialect before I get too old?" There is something about the Matterhorn looming over the town that really gets to me.

Seriously, the nature there is beautiful, and it's worth the especially if your guests are interested in doing som hiking. We took guests there last year and they still talk about the hikes we did (with 2 kids and a baby, hence not very demanding hikes).

Otherwise I can recommend Braunwald and Flumserberg, borh easy to reach from ZH (not sure where you are) and very picturesque (note: in Flumserberg the village itself isn't nice, but the scenery from the top of the mountain is awesome). Klewenalp is also nice, but I've only been there in winter.

Re: Best Places to show in switzerland

Another vote for the Appenzell area if you want some smaller towns that are typically Swiss and not too touristy. The old parts of St Gallen are also worth a visit and not far from Appenzell

Re: Best Places to show in switzerland

I went to the Jakobsbad in the Appenzell last week.
went to the top with the Luftseilbahn and then went down by foot. It was a really nice view of the Alps and the Swiss nature.

I also recommend the Wildegg Schloss, and from there, walk two hours to the other Schloss, Habsburg. is also a really nice thing to do visiting Switzerland and it's history.
although you can also do the trip with car. I know I should have :P

I heard of another one with pigs but couldn't find the website.

another favourite of ours is brambruesch above chur. not very touristy, has a gondola directly from chur, nice little restaurants and an alp, where you can watch cheese making and have a cold beer. if you don't want to take the gondola it takes 20 mins to drive there from chur.

justs took a visiting friend there over the weekend and he absolutely loved it. real genuine swiss experience.

Just make sure your expectations aren't too high. It's not Wengen, Riederalp or Zermatt. But accessible mountains are good to have when receiving guests that don't have mountain goat genes. You still get the ohs! and the ahs!.

The village in Flumserberg really isn't much, but it's easy to access from Zürich (S-Bahn to Untertertzen and lift from there), one of the walks on the top is accessible to pretty much anyone who's still breathing and offers a very impressive scenery.

Braunwald is more charming and also easy to access, with very nice walks and scenery. But from the very top the walks are a but more demanding.

By the way, I'm also looking for tips on other nice mountain walks easily accessible from Zürich, as we are getting more guests later this year and ai getting a bit tired of the Flumserberg-Atzmännig (perfect with kids)-Braunwald combo.. Things that a 64 year old Canadian in normal shape could do, for instance. She's used to walk quite a bit, but they don't have much in the way of uphills and downhills where she lives and I'm not sure hipow sure-footed she is or how strong her heart is. Don't want to kill her...

Any ideas?

Not near zurich, but apparently very beautiful place...creux du vin
Possible to hike from the nearest train station (around 1.5h). Also possible to drive to the top (near the restaurant soliat) and then explore...
