Re: Swiss pass vs Halb Tax

Just received my RED card. Look quite nice.
The thing I dislike about this new card compared to the old Halb Tax is that the Halb Tax plan will be automatically renewed, unless you inform the SBB in advance. I just went straight to the online profile and deactivate the automatic subscription...

It has a number, RFID, a QR code and a barcode! I guess any of those may be usable.

Both times mine has been read he used the camera on an iPhone to read the QR code, which I assume means there is a connection back to the server. Unless they load the entire database, which with a modern smartphone is not impossible.

Does anyone know whether the RFID part actually includes entitlements, so it could work offline, and would need "loading" with any changes?

Re: Swiss pass vs Halb Tax

So - after heading to the ZVV office earlier this week, I found out that ZVV abos will not be on the Swiss Pass before mid-December 2018. Meaning, if you get your yearly abo this November for 2015/2016 and then again in Nov 2016 for 2016/2017 and then again in Nov 2017 for 2017/2018 and last in Nov 2018 for 2018/2019, you you won't be stuck with the Swiss Pass until end of 2019.

This'll probably mean that those who use ZVV and have a halbtax will probably have to carry both Swiss Pass and ZVV abo.

Also, the RFID thing on the Swiss Pass doesn't enable people to take money off your card, only the SBB to load things (halbtax, GA etc.) onto your card.

Good to know you can do this online and don't have to wait forever in the line at the SBB office.

I think the idea of having a national Octopus card would be interesting. However, they have been traditionally driven by organic growth from mass transit systems where the advantages were clear and allowed for high throughput systems. But this is dependent on automated/self-serve barriers.

The contactless cards doesn't really make sense where there is manual checking. The current system of visual checking is faster, albeit less secure.

to have the Halbtax automatically renewed is of enormous A
advantage to people like me
....... and I love the idea about a Kind of GA for selected dates

Which is fine if you don't forget that in a year's time - of course the new card shows no expiry date, nor even that you have a halb tax...

They will still send you a reminder / preprinted invoice, the same as previously - or so the helpful guy in the station told me.

I guess we have to wait about nine months now to find out...

I don't know about you but I have about three different devices with built-in calendars that allow me to set a reminder for such things months in advance.

Re: Swiss pass vs Halb Tax

Hi,

on big problem with the Swiss Pass is that they cannot read it on German trains and so they have no idea if you have a half price card or a GA. You can get a reduction in German when you travel with a GA or half price card and so if you have a Swiss pass you have to get a piece of paper from the SBB for every trip in Germany to say what type of card you have. You cannot get one for the whole year which means you have to go to counter every time you buy a ticket for Germany !!!!

It is good to know or you many have a problem on the train as they will not know if you have a valid ticket.

Have fun

Martin

Re: Swiss pass vs Halb Tax

So how does this work when I'm using my Halbtax card to buy a discounted cable car or ski lift ticket? Will they have readers for the Swiss Pass at Sattel, and all the other ski resorts where you can get a discount?

In theory they should have a reader. In practice there are apparently still issues.

Re: Swiss pass vs Halb Tax

how does swisspass work with ski resorts and skipasses? does it say/does anyone know?
will it replace the current electronic passes you pay a 5chf deposit for? or does it just mean that if you do SnownRail that you pay on Swiss pass, then show ski ticket counter at ski resort the swiss pass and then get another ticket - the skipass electronic pass....for another 5chf.
