Best TWO places to visit in Switzerland

Hi guys! I really need your help! My friends are coming just for 3 days for visiting. So in 3 days I guess we may visit only 2 places (unfortunately!). I am having hard time to choose ones uff (I was choosing among Interlaken,Saas Fee, Belinzona, Grindelwald...) ! They prefer nature rather that cities, and we will be leaving from Geneva by car. Please share your valuable experience, give me two best places to visit. THANK YOU!

Re: Best TWO places to visit in Switzerland

An impossible question- truly. Personally, I would not spend the whole time driving and driving to get to the 'best' place.... there is so much to see and do closer to the Leman. So I'd head for Montreux for coffee, perhaps visit Chateau de Chillon, then head up for the mountains and take them to the favbulous spa in Ovronnaz- and spend the night there. Then down into the valley again, and then up at the other end to Albinen to lunch and then up to Leukerbad (more spas there if desired) and take the cable car to the top of the Gemmi. One of our favourite and easy walk is actually up in the Lötschtal, at Fafleralp- almost up to the several glaciers, where you would hopefully see some marmots and a pair of golden eagles.

If you are heading for the Bernese Alps, go via the MWay from Vevey to Bulle, then up to Charmey (nice spa there) and over the Jaunpass and down to the lakes- at the end you can come back by the Lötschberg tunnel which takes you back at the end of the Rhône valley, not far from the road up to Leukerbad.

Re: Best TWO places to visit in Switzerland

Odile, thank you very much for the tips. I fully realize it is an impossible question still need to organize everything. We've also been already to Montreux, Chateau de Chillon and the lake area. But I will consider going to the Bernese Alps, sound nice. Thank you again!

Re: Best TWO places to visit in Switzerland

From your list, Interlaken is just a village with access to the mountains above, including Grindelwald, but I would not visit Interlaken itself. I think this area above Interlaken is worth a trip, not too far and you can walk, hike, and take the scenic trains and cablecars. Consider Grindelwald, Wengen, Murren, etc.. or trek from one to the other.

In the Valais, not too far, consider Zermatt and Saas Fee.

I would say Bellinzona is much too far for the time you have if driving from Geneva.

Re: Best TWO places to visit in Switzerland

A nice two-day trip by car from Geneve would be to Gruyere & Broc for the cheese and chocolate factory tours with lunch in Gruyere, then take the mountains road up to Chateau d'Oex and around to Gstaad. Stay the night in Gstaad.

The next day, continue on the mountain road around to Les Diabelerets and take the cablecar up to Glacier 3000 for some easy hiking/walking, stunning views and fabulous pictures. Continue back down the mountain to Aigle where the chateau d'Aigle has wine tastings on some days, check the internet.

Then across the valley to Troistorrents and up to Morgins. Cross the border into France and travel through the Val d'Abondance. Definitely stop in Abondance at the 12th century abbey which has been restored. Continue through the valley to Thonons-les-Bains and then back to Geneve on the French side of the lake.

Re: Best TWO places to visit in Switzerland

I would also avoid the too much travel if possible. Heading round the lake into Valais would be my option, possibly Zermatt/Saas Fee or Sion.

Gruyere could be a possibility on the way to the Interlaken. From there I would visit Schynige Platte and the Alpine Garden http://www.jungfrau.ch/en/tourism/de...ickets-travel/

Maybe you can show them all the options via youtube and let them decide where they want to go based on their preferences. I personally love Saas Fee and Grindelwald.. At the end of the day they'll be getting a unique Swiss experience no matter where you guys end up going Have a great time!

Re: Best TWO places to visit in Switzerland

Living in Lausanne for the past two years and trying to "see it all" but being constrained with travel time (due to having a toddler in the car who gets impatient after an hour or so), I can say that the Rhone Valley is really as nice and good as any of the further away places.

Driving down the lake is spectacular in itself, and you can stop in Morges or Vevey for a coffee and a lakeside stroll (much nicer than Montreux). Another option would be Ouchy in Lausanne (there is a Movenpick hotel restaurant with great deserts).
From the lake head down towards Martigny. A close option is to head up to Villars-sur-Ollon, Les Diablerets, Rochers de Naye or Leysin. All are high up with nice walks and views, though I wouldn't call any of them "spectacular" (albeit, I haven't paid the 70 CHF to go up Glacier 3000...).

Better than that is to continue towards Martigny and Sion. Personally, I love the Sion area. There is a ton to do within an hour and the tourist info has a great little map with these little known but magnificent destinations. The best are the Grand Dixence dam (larger than Hoover Dam), Col de Sanetsch (amazing!), Bisse de Saviese (5 long hanging bridges) and Lac d'Emmoson (an 89 degree funicular and spectacular views of Mont Blanc). There are also plenty of little ski towns to get a B&B in for the night (Evolene is great).

I would surely head to Zermatt from there if you can and you have a clear day. The Matterhorn is in a league of its own when it comes to mountains. I have seen many of the Swiss Alps and I have never seen anything close to as magnificent. I just couldn't stop staring at it.

Another option is the Aletsch Glacier. Couldn't stop staring at it either!

Re: Best TWO places to visit in Switzerland

I would put Zermatt on the top of my list, without any hesitation. The place still takes my breath away after several visits.

Number 2 is more difficult, there is so much to see... But after visiting Zermatt, a trip to Aletsch Gletscher is nice and convenient, you're in Riederalp or Bettmeralp in about 1,5 hour using public transportation. It's very impressive, even if you've seen a glacier before.

Much further but worth the hassle would be Mustair and the Unterengadin. Whenever I go, I get the urge to learn Romanche and move there.

Lauterbrunnen. If the weather is right, I think it is worth the ticket to Jungfraujoch.

Re: Best TWO places to visit in Switzerland

I agree with Trollemor.

1: Zermatt to see the Matterhorn. If money is tight, you don't need to go up Gornergrat (train) or Klein Matterhorn as it is rather expensive and the views from up there aren't THAT great in my opinion.

2: Aletsch Glacier. Either go up Riederalp by ropeway and then Hohfluh by chairlift (Moosfluh is under reconstruction) or Bettmeralp by ropeway and then Bettmerhorn by ropeway.
The Aletsch glacier is really quite impressive. I've been up there several times and it never ceases to amaze me. You can hike down from Mosfluh to Riederealp or from Bettmerhorn to Bettmeralp.

Agree with you on the Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn. I only go up there when I'm skiing and it's included in my lift ticket. It's nice but not a necessity. This summer and last I was there for a few days and had my fix of scenery taking the lifts to Blauherd one day and to Trockener Steig the other. There is a good and not so difficult walk between Trockener Steig and Schwarzsee, you actually walk along the foot of the Matterhorn for most of it. The last part down to Schwarzsee is pretty steep, but we did it with two 5-year olds and a baby on a carrier and we're not hard-core hiking types.

One of my favourite places in Switzerland is Brienzer Rothorn. I've been up there several times and I still feel amazed by the spectacular views.

Yes, Brienzer Rothorn is a nice place too. I went there not long ago. Here are some pictures I took:

Re: Best TWO places to visit in Switzerland

From Lausanne drive/train to Zermat, spend one day which includes quick trip up to Gornergrat to see Matterhorn. Then drive/train through tunnel to Jungfrau region (perhaps travel in evening) .... next day flurry around Lauterbrunnen, from them train to top of Jungfrau, back down to / quick look at grindelwald (yes, it's possible), then train/drive back to Lausanne, perhaps in evening.

This is the absolute top of CH.
