is it stupid idea to hiking tomorrow?

All this summer, I've had only one wish.

To go up a mountain top, take that book out of the postbox and write my name on it. Stupid wish, but then again, sitting at home, drinking beer and playing counter strike is not any better.

So, I know Marwees [link] has this postbox on top and I would like to reach it. [pic of that said postbox: link]

the weather tomorrow is mostly sunny: https://www.meteoblue.com/en/weather...erland_6939379
but the webcam shows a bit of snow: www.ebenalp.ch/de/webcams/marwees

So for a mediocre hiker with good boots, is it a stupid idea to try this tomorrow? Because stupidity kills and I don't want to die (not yet).

Can I except other hikers on this path tomorrow or is hiking season generally over?

And if any hiker is willing to join, I'd like to make the following offer:
1. drinks and food in all the restaurants along the path. Or.
2. one night of unlimited beer in zurich or any other place of your choice (I'm a man of my word)

Totally confused.

Regards,
idiot.

Probably. But what the hell; go for it.

As long as it's safe, and you're not doing it alone, that is.

Re: is it stupid idea to hiking tomorrow?

As long as you're properly prepared (7 P's).

Backpack, with reserve, warm clothing, water- and wind-proof outer garments, food and drink - all minimum requirements.
If it were me, I would also have a small stove and food to heat plus ability to make hot drink, plus a lightweight sleeping bag or heat reflective blanket. Whistle and a torch. Map and compass.

If you have absolutely no one to go with, then make sure that someone knows where you're going and your expected time schedule and instructions on what to do if they haven't heard from you by a certain time.

Have a fully charged phone and a reserve battery or battery pack for recharge - but be aware that mobile phones may not have a signal in mountainous areas.

Leave early and don't underestimate the time required for ascent and descent.

One of your most dangerous and not obvious enemies, is wind and wind-chill, so be aware of strengthening winds as you climb higher.

Have the sense to admit that you might not make the summit, this time and turn back if conditions change for the worse.

DISCLAIMER: I don't know the summit in question - whether or not, it's just a brisk walk up a hill with many others doing the same, or something a bit more extreme and isolated.

ETA: I missed the link to location on first reading, it's not so bad, so my above reply may be a bit overkill.

Re: is it stupid idea to hiking tomorrow?

Thanks!

I'd be taking most of the precautions you have mentioned and most importantly I am confident I can say no and turn back when difficulty is beyond my level.

So it's on tomorrow then

Regards,
reasonably calm idiot.

If you are on your own, I would take the cable car from Wasserauen up to Ebenalp instead. There are plenty of well used hiking trails and facilities up there

Re: is it stupid idea to hiking tomorrow?

If you're not sure it's probably not a good idea to go alone on anything more than a good walk.. Once you've done that multiple times and been hit by weather changes and unexpected stuff then step it up a little and become confident..
With the basic gear like mentioned you might be a bit miserable if you got caught out but you are unlikely to die within a couple of days at this time of year. It's not like you're going to the moon

Re: is it stupid idea to hiking tomorrow?

After action report:

I made the hike, reached the summit and I'm happy about it. And that's where the good part ends.

The bad part: the hike route had both red and blue(alpine) trails and now I realize that when going alone alpine trails are beyond my skill level . I shouldn't have done this hike. For 30mins, I had to piggy back along with a couple while coming down from the top. I spent most of my time planning and worrying about the trail instead of enjoying the view. My mistake, I admit it.

Takeway:
I'll probably continue hiking but stick to white and red trails like ebenalp or lower. No more alpine trails. fk it.

photos for anyone interested: https://goo.gl/photos/9yp4ko3HZcZY77USA

Takeway2:
I should probably spend more time in the city and drink beer and live a long life On that note, anyone up for a beer in zurich?

Re: is it stupid idea to hiking tomorrow?

Didn't see this earlier or I'd have tried to put you off. Marwees is at least a T4 hike which is only for decently experienced hikers. As you describe yourself, you probably shouldn't go beyond a T2 if you're looking at hikes on Hikr.

BTW, altitude is nothing to do with the blue and red trails. Only difficulty. You're unlikely to find a blue sign lower down but you can find plenty of red ones higher up.
