EuropCar - Just used them.

For those of you who fly EasyJet to the UK or elsewhere.. I just used Europcar for a five day hire and it was pretty painless. I booked via the EasyJet booking for a bit of a discount and the hire was 50gbp less than any other quote from the big names. I paid in advance and no hidden extras waiting for me at the airport.

Interestingly although I booked through EasyJet UK, the car computer had been helpfully changed to French for me :-/

And today they sent me a survey to complete in German :-\

But I'd give em a try if you are shopping around.

Re: EuropCar - Just used them.

I used them, a few times in the past, until they took the whole 500 excess for a 20 quid plastic mirror indicator lens cover and a new tyre (after a puncture). This appears to be standard procedure.

After several calls and some hassle, I got all but about a hundred quid back.
They also take the full excess amount off the credit card at pick-up.

Just search, Europcar, and there are few similar stories, on this forum.

I wont use them any more, unless there wouldn't be any alternative.

On my last trip back, in the summer, I used a third party booker - rentalcars.com - and got a deal through them with Budget.
Much cheaper than with Europcar and also booking with Budget directly comparing like for like, with airport pick-up and only 70 charged against credit card at pick-up.
All major renters are offered, and some really cheap deals with lesser known ones, if you prepared to take a gamble, as is off airport pick-up.

Excess protection is considerably less too, although as with all excess protection it wont cover the things you're most likely to accidentally damage like tyres, so check what's not covered.

The only thing is (which I suppose makes the savings) is that you pay in full, in advance, at the time of booking.
Recently, I've been bombarded with emails offering 5 a day with Hertz in UK.

Came across rentalcars.com through Kayak, so shouldn't be cowboys.

Re: EuropCar - Just used them.

Yeah ok. I should qualify that EuropCar were good on this occasion. My first time using them.
I paid special attention to the condition of the car because I picked it up after midnight with nobody there to check it with me. I called in next morning to report 10 other little marks, scratches, wheel scuffs etc. I was kinda expecting a fight when i took it back but no, the guy walked around and immediately signed the paper "No new damage" car in same condition and handed me a copy.

I had always used Enterprise before but got fed up with the fact that the price i booked was never the final price, they always had something to add on which "i had missed" when i booked.

EuropCar seem to be a front for about 20 companies - Their desk at Edinburgh airport had the list and was twice the size of even Hertz or Avis desk.

Re: EuropCar - Just used them.

I've used Europcar in Sicily last summer. (I've used them before and good experience overall). I was advice to use big car hire companies in Sicily as people have been charged without reason after they've returned their cars. I booked Golf or similar.
At Palermo airport they gave me fiat punto. I called the gentlemen who worked there to come outside and see my family. "Mama Mia you are not going to fit in that fiat punto he said and smiled" He gave us Volvo s60 at no extra cost. No after-charge so overall good experience.

Re: EuropCar - Just used them.

I almost always use Europcar and have never had any issues. I wish I'd used them for our trip to Ireland in the Summer as our Sixt experience was far from satisfactory.

I also had bad experience with Sixt. In April 2013 I booked a car with Sixt using my UK viza debit card. The website said, this order is booked, please have your debit card in Spain when picking up the car. When we landed in Barcelona Sixt told me that i need to have credit card (not debit card) and they didn't gave me the car. UK Sixt website didn't have any problems taking my money. With 2 small children i didnt even argue, I needed a solution to get to my destination asap. I was lucky ad Europcar gave me a car on the spot using the same uk debit card. When returned to UK, they first refused to refund my money. When I asked about Sixt address in UK for court correspondence, they refunded the money and gave me 50 voucher. I never used the voucher...

This year I somehow acquired deep scratches on the bumper of the brand-new Mercedes I hired off them. The repair cost was 350. Entirely refunded by my global car hire excess insurance (which costs 35 a year). So I'm not completely convinced of your claim of "standard procedure". One of the advantages of this insurance is that if a claim is over the top, they will fight it for you as it is, naturally, in their interests.

I used Europcar for many years without no issue, as they offered lowest prices on covering the excess. However, now I have the above insurance so can choose the max excess, I shop around and frequently find lower prices. Last time in the UK I used Enterprise, which was great - and much shorter queues than the Europcar desk!

Re: EuropCar - Just used them.

I'm not bad-mouthing them off per se .... I've previously happily used them without problems - I think only when there is a problem, then you realise how good (or bad) an operator is.

My niggle was (is) that, immaterial of third party excess protection/insurance, they will deduct the full excess off your credit card at time of pick-up - or you pay, at that time, their own excess protection.
This puts an initial strain on credit card limits, which normally take a battering, anyway, on holiday; plus, when there is a charge, they already have the total excess amount, and then you have to (almost) fight to get the difference refunded.

When I had a puncture, which was unrepairable, I contacted them, and they told me to go to any Kwik-Fit and get it replaced on account. Unfortunately, tyres aren't normally covered under excess protection (can't comment on third party, global, annual insurance policies, though).
The mirror indicator lens, I tried to source myself, and replace, but it wasn't carried in stock and there was insufficient time to order. The cost was less than 22.

I'll accept a hundred quid for tyre (although with a national fleet contract, cost would be half that) and twenty-odd quid for a lens replacement ..... but not the full 500 notes, that they would have kept, if I hadn't caused a stink. [I wonder how many people lay down and just accept this?]

Several calls and emails, and quite a few weeks, with not very co-operative people, eventually got my my deposit, less costs back.

As my visits aren't more than every two or so years, a protection insurance isn't viable. The excess protection with rentalcars.com was considerably cheaper (IIRC) than getting it at time of pickup with operator.

.... and with rentalcars.com, you can still book Europcar, if you so choose - but I bet the charge will be less than booking with them direct.

Re: EuropCar - Just used them.

Another thing to watch for is asking them to refuel for you. They charge for a full tank at the time of pick up, regardless of how much fuel you use.

I don't mind paying a bit more for the convenience but I do mind paying for 750 miles of fuel when I only used 200.

Re: EuropCar - Just used them.

I also used rentalcars.com (Now based in Athens !) and booked a Ford Escort with EuropCar at Bristol airport. I did the pre rental checks and found 5 items not listed. The office which was responsible closed at 5pm, so I went back to the issuing desk and got them to note down the extra damages, all now OK.

Later, driving on the M6 a warning light came on, and there was no driver's handbook. I stopped at a service station & looked closely and decided it was the tyre under inflation warning. So I adjusted all the tyres to 2.5 ATU and reset the tyre check system. No other problems, but not having the handbook could have been a big problem. I have the tyre check system on my Skoda, so luckily I was aware of it, and knew what to do.
