Re: Xmas market

Germany.

Around here, not much going on, just small-time stuff.

Don't know when the one in Lugano starts, but ours is this Saturday afternoon.

You will be able to see it from Arosio (well, at least the village).

There is nothing in Lugano yet.

Everyone who is asking a question on the forum doesn't open ones eyes?

If you mean that everyone who asks questions on the forum don't open their eyes, you are probably right. However, folk with a very low post count who don't react to a reply by checking links given or doing a bit of research in the direction shown, tend to get jumped on more often than perhaps the rest of us. Perhaps we like new members to get used to negative reaction (or being teased!) from the very start.

Dresden. They have a wonderful X-Mas market, which since 4 years has been very oriented for Russian tourists. It would probably make them feel very welcome. It's far away, though...

The link shows markets in "Stuttgart (GER)", "Munich (GER)" and "Freiburg (GER)" which answers your question.

It doesn't list Dresden probably because it's 6 hours by train even from Basel

I like the description for this one:

"Rapperswil-Jona Christmas market.

The greatest pleasure lies in the anticipation!"

As a local I can confirm this is indeed correct

Re: Xmas market

In Germany, the most charming one I'd say it's in Nürnberg. But it's a bit distant from where you are. In Switzerland, maybe you'd consider to travel to the German-speaking area, just to name a few: Bremsgarten, Einsiedeln, Rapperswil-Jona, and even the one in Zurich has a singing christmas tree

Re: Xmas market

Most Christmas festivities, including markets selling pretty junk to drunken overweight women, start after the first Advent Sunday. This is 4 Sundays before Christmas, which means the coming Sunday 29th November is the first advent day. So most markets will open from Monday 30th November.

Keep your eyes open and read the local newspapers. There will be one in Lugano and one in Locarno, probably near the center of town.

Re: Xmas market

As has been mentioned, some of the best X-Mas markets can be found in Germany. The one in Freiburg is nice. The one in Nürnberg is absolutely HUGE and gorgeous ... one of the nicest of its kind. Munich is also not bad / cute

Re: Xmas market

Prague. The best Christmas market I have ever been too.

Snow gently falling, a glass of mulled wine. The dark night lit up by the lights of candles. Hand in hand with my wife-to-be wandering around the stalls after a truly fantastic meal of local game.

Bliss.

Every one I have been to since has been absolute hell - dragging three kids around and trying not to lose them or have a lit cigarette stubbed in their eyes or a glass of gluhwein tipped over their heads as we jostle through the crowds.
And then one of them needs the loo...

Hell

Maybe we'll go back in a few years...

Re: Xmas market

Went there this last week for a couple of days. We enjoyed it very much. According to other Swiss visitors we met there, it isn't as big or impressive as some of the other Christmas markets, but I like Colmar with its old buildings and Little Venice. We also went to a couple of museums. Bartholdi - the designer of the Statue of Liberty - very interesting. Quaint mixture of really old houses tastefully decorated and other buildings which had crazy polar bears and the like all over the place but we found it fun. We didn't buy much but we aren't the shopping type. Couple of 'roundabout' and small 'big wheel' type of rides for small children whose parents have more money than sense. Lovely to watch though! Warm comfortable boots are a must. Cobbled streets are not ideal surface for thin soled elegant footwear.
We went the lazy way - by coach from Zürich to the hotel door. Easily do-able by car I should imagine.
Have fun.

Re: Xmas market

I am going to Lucerne's Xmas market next Sunday. We will be in the town for about 6 hours. Does anyone have any idea if shops have exceptional opening during the advent period, or otherwise things to do apart from the market? Did the Transport museum a few years ago, but don't know the town otherwise. Any restaurant recommendations for a fondue or somesuch ?
