Day Trip on a SNOWY day?

Hello!

I have the day off tomorrow, and really need to get out of this town (Solothurn). I really want to go and clear my head, get into the countryside a little more.

I have the GA pass and don't mind sitting on trains all day!

However, its meant to snow... in pretty much all the places I looked at.

Any last minute advice?
PLEASE!

When it snows you won't see much of the countryside. Go to Bern, a delightful city with small shops and a covered pavement.

What's wrong with snow? Go to the mountains, or a hike through the snow!!

Re: Day Trip on a SNOWY day?

Go to geneve......or montreux

if it clears in the evening , the view on lake geneve from the train (around lausanne) is awesome (when then lights are on)

Re: Day Trip on a SNOWY day?

Many of the cablecars aren't running on weekdays - so before you jump on a train to somewhere snowy and pretty check their website for whether they are or not.

Interlaken is 1hr45 on the train from Solothun (changing in Bern)

If time isn't a worry - and you are just happy on the train watching the world go by you can loop round then to Meiringen; Luzern and back to Solothun

Re: Day Trip on a SNOWY day?

Thanks for all your advice!

I'm going to Bern tomorrow afternoon/evening for the light show. So need another plan for today

I found out that the Erlenbach I.S. Cable car is still running, so I might try for there. If it is snowing too heavily then I'll just stay on the travel and loop back to solothurn.

Is Interlaken worth a visit?

Have you seen this ?

http://www.pilatus.ch/en/railway-cab...en-round-trip/

it is a combination of boats and trains to top of a mountain. Could be better on a sunny day, also it may cost even for GA holders

Nothing to see from Pilatus or Rigi today, you'd just be up in the clouds..

Re: Day Trip on a SNOWY day?

Okay, I'm on the train to Bern from solothurn, with lots of layers on for every option!
I was thinking of getting a train to Erlenbach from Bern, then the cable car up Stockhorn, but just check the webcam and it's all clouds... Is there anything else to do in that region? Any cute villages, good cafés or valley hikes? Or should I just stop in Thun or Interlaken for the day?

Re: Day Trip on a SNOWY day?

You not stopping in Bern?
It is a pretty city and on a rainy day like today good because many of the shops/cafes are under cover .
Later in the evening there is a light show on the Bundeshaus which is meant to be good.

I think that there is something absolutely magnificent about hiking through the snowy Swiss landscape. Just be sure to wear some proper snowshoes and it'll be absolutely exhilarating

Maybe there will be less snow in Schaffhausen tomorrow but watch out for slippery stones

Re: Day Trip on a SNOWY day?

Hey guys,

I didn't want to open a new topic so I'll ask here.

So my girlfriend is coming on Saturday to CH and we want to do a day trip sometimes next week. What would you recommend us to go to see starting from Bern. I thought of doing a tour like Bern-Basel-Zurich-Luzern-Bern, spending an hour in each of the three cities Basel-Zurich-Luzern but I figured out it might take to much time. So basically I still want to do the same but on a smaller scale. What do you recommend?

I thought of doing Bern-Luzern-Interlaken-Bern.
If you have any other ideas, shoot out!

On Saturday the weather will be fairly good, so why not take her to the Schildhorn mountain? Revolving restaurant on the top, where they made part of the Bond film Casino Royal.
http://schilthorn.ch/en/Welcome

You can buy one Duo one day pass, (CHF 69,-- for 2 adults) train ticket from the post office, one Half Tax SBB card necessary Demi-Tariff,
Duo ticket includes Fr 33 reduction for the Demi-Tariff card
https://www.postshop.ch/de/Produkte/...-KE_683874?P=1

http://fahrplan.sbb.ch/bin/query.exe/dn journey to the top of mountain takes 3 hours 20 minutes

http://map.search.ch/Bern..Stechelberg

The mountain cable car section might not accept the special train ticket, you might have to pay some extra money.

Afterwards you could take the train from Interlaken to Lucerne and stay the night there, or simply explore Bern, which is a great city.

Re: Day Trip on a SNOWY day?

Schilthorn Bond film.was On Her Majesty's Secret Service : Starring Aussie George Lazenby : Made nearly 50 years ago : And is a great real story as money from the filming helped finish the project and 50 years on : It can still market itself based on the film ...

Great place to visit on a sunny day

And spend 1 hour or so drinking a 007 cappuccino

My claim to fame : Helicopter ride off the slope just below after a pathetic fall

Back to exorcise the demons this coming week
