welll you won't if you fly non-stop to akl from dubai. Also, was the melbourne stop due to a problem with the plane or just that you chose a bizarre connection - because it's the same plane that continues to auckland,

Think you might be confused a little there. A direct flight wouldn't fly DXB-MEL-AK.

I'm not against Emirates at all, but did have the worst 'gone tech' incident with them when they grounded the entire A380 fleet back in March 2012. We were travelling with the Emirates rep as his guests and were still faced with a 4 or 5 day delay returning from HKG. We only got back because they were facing a compensation bill from our employer if we didn't make it into work on time.

Errr... that's my point - you said you'd probably be stuck with an annoying stopover in Australia and I said you won't if you fly non-stop from Dubai to Auckland.

Re: Flights from ZRH to AKL

My friend recently flew Emirates from ZRH to AKL and aside from a longer stopover in DXB, they also touched down in BNE, though it may have only been to refuel.

Air New Zealand is actually excellent; I flew with them BNE-LAX recently and was very pleasantly surprised. But I don't think they fly ZRH to AKL, only in codeshare.

I'd take Singapore, Emirates or possibly Thai, mainly based on flying times as that for me is the most important bit, especially on a massive trip like this. Never in a million years would I first fly to London just to (presumably) save a few bucks. Singapore is great, Thai is okay too (though BKK is less pleasant than SIN for a layover), Emirates is great too but I can't comment on DXB as a layover airport (only flew Emirates from Australia to Asia). Personally, I prefer to split a long trip like this into two flights that are more or less equal in duration - I'd rather spend 2*12 hours on planes than 1*6 and 1*18, but that's just me.

I think I'm leaning towards Emirates at the moment; A short refuel in Oz doesn't bother me in the slightest. Comparing the Lions' tour prices with and without flights and factoring in flying from ZRH instead actually works out a little cheaper, and that's not including the price and time aspect of actually getting to London from CH in the first place.

Re: Flights from ZRH to AKL

The stopover I had in MEL was scheduled (not for repair), but was a couple of years ago now.

But regardless, I completely agree with Samaire13, the trip from Dubai to NZ is torture. Going via Asia and splitting the travel time fairly evenly between the two legs is heaps better. 12 vs 18 hours might not sound like a big difference but it is definitely noticeable!

Never understood the attraction of Emirates (other than price), so if it is just 1-2 hundred chuffs difference in terms of price I would still go with Cathay/Singapore/Air NZ.

P.S. And if you go with Cathay don't forget to signup with Asia Miles before you go....the points you collect from ZRH - AKL will be enough to pay for a night in a decent hotel in Hong Kong if you want to stop a day on the way back ...or a huge bunch of stuff from the Asia Miles store. Yes, that's right, finally some loyalty points that can be redeemed for something decent!

In most of their Business class fares, they include complimentary limo transfers at many destinations, and up to a reasonable distance from the airport. They also offer a complimentary hotel stay in Dubai if the minimum possible tranfer between flights is more than 8hrs. That seals the deal with a lot of Business class travellers.

Re: Flights from ZRH to AKL

OK, thanks for all the information, I'll have a good thunk about flight options.

Next question: two of the standard tours I'm looking at include stays in either Christchurch or Martinborough. Which would be your preference?

Re: Flights from ZRH to AKL

Minor thread resurrection, but anyway. Now the schedules for June 2017 are available; I've been comparing various airlines and Singapore seem to offer the best bang-for-buck. Next question; when is the best time to book a long-haul for next Summer? Should I go for it now, or maybe wait until the new year?

Funnily enough, I'm flying out to Melbourne on Cathay later this week for work. It'll be interesting to see what it's like; however we're going business class, so it' might be difficult to gauge how economy would be further down the line.

Re: Flights from ZRH to AKL

I would personally avoid Emirates. Flew them in Eco a couple of years back in the 777 and really found the seats very cramped and uncomfortable (narrow and also very hard). 6 hours was already too many.

Just for completeness, all Emirates flights are in A380 on this route these days.

Re: Flights from ZRH to AKL

Frankfurt is the nearest "big" airport to Zurich. If you are flying Business to AKL, then it can be much cheaper to fly Economy to Frankfurt and go Business from there to Auckland, than flying Business directly from ZRH - AKL.
Going via FRA greatly increases the number of potential airlines that one can fly with as well.

Go for it if you found a good deal. Singapore tends to get more expensive over time - maybe all airlines do, but I find it most noticeable with Singapore and I fly with them on a quite regular basis.

Frankfurt with Singapore, for example, is €1450.- compared with Sfr 1323.- from ZRH.

Anyway, I don't need any more airline recommendations, just when is the best time to book; now or closer to the departure date?

Singapore airlines is a bit of the exception as they have an A380 connection to ZRH they struggle to fill... otherwise are there indeed often better bargains via FRA or even Munich.

Re: Flights from ZRH to AKL

As much as I like Cathay pacific, their connection times for ZRH- Oz are not very good. Last time I checked you need to spend around 3hrs + on the ground in HKG, compared to around 1-2 hours in Singapore. The flight is long enough already...

If you see a decent deal on Singapore Airlines now, go for it. In my experience , they may advertise cheaper fares closer to my travel dates, but only worth the risk if my dates are flexible and I'm not flying on a Friday or Sunday, etc.etc.

If it's one of the Singapore "Early Bird" specials (and you are set on Singapore) - do it now! Singapore promises that their Early Bird deals are the cheapest they will offer for the year, so while you might get similar prices later, you won't get cheaper.

Having never flown the route before, I've no idea what would be a "good deal". The price on Singapore is 1323.- return at the moment, but I don't think it's specifically an "early-bird" special. Is that a good price? I leave on a Monday and return on a Sunday, if that's any indication.

ZRH-SIN-AKL return for 1323 - oh yes, that is a very good deal imo. I usually pay about that or even more just to get to SIN or DPS (though to be fair, I never go for the cheapest saver rate). And all my OZ flights so far cost more than that. Much more. Even on the cheaper fare.

Go for it, really.
