| | | Nice resort, sledding
Hi,
I'll be taking a friend out to Swiss mountains around New Year's and I was wondering where the ideal place would be.
We're not looking to ski but to rather sled or snow hike. I was thinking more like Gstaad or Verbier, however, I haven't been to either so I wouldn't know which one is more scenic or the one with more snow(or any snow for that matter)...
Thanks, and feels good to be part of another swiss-expat community!

Don't know about the snow, but I can drop a few names to you...
We usually go sledding at La Berra, and we tried to go once in SaasFee.
*Intuition tells me that La Berra must be far less ritzy than Gstaad.
Vive la luge!

While less known and far less glamorous than Gstaad etc. if it's some decent sledging you're after, try Bergün in Kt. Graubünden.
They close off the top valley road for a few kilometres in winter and turn it into a nice run for the traditional Davoser Schlitten (the wooden ones you sit on) and I think you can rent a more hi-tech, lying prone on your back, can't see where you're going stylee if you fancy it .
It's a quiet sleepy little village but great for families or those who are looking for winter activities other than skiing.
Engelberg also has a long sledging run, but probably not all that much snow yet.
Have fun |

I'm afraid I don't know the resorts well enough down your way. Maybe some of the Romandie forum members have some suggestions?

La Berra is Romandie! It's not far from Gruyère, so you can treat yourself to a generous portion of "crème double" in the Gruyère village afterwards! Too bad the slopes are currently closed!
Saas Fee is in Valais.

We went to Grindelwald yesterday. It's got a 15km sledge run, apparently the world's longest.
Despite the conditions, I have to report it was awesome fun! Woohoo!
I just wish there wasn't a 3 hour train ride each way, and a 3 hour hike to get to the top of the run... (i'd do it again though). Highly recommended if you can handle the walk.

He Daniel you can get a bus there, it is the bus to Faulhorn not Bussalp.

I have found an amazing sledging run, at least from this article in German: http://tages-anzeiger.ch/dyn/reisen/schweiz/830835.html
Basically you are taken by a quad through the snow for an hour all the way up to the Grimselpass. There is a hotel which will do this for you, then you sled back through 11km of snow, with hardly anyone else around I imagine.
You can also hike up to the hotel with snow shoes for 3 hours, but I am going to try the Quad . Warning though, the article suggests the sledge run is quite exhillarating so I am not sure if it is suited to kids. Call the hotel to book 027 9731177. www.grimselpass.ch. I will let you know whether it was fun.
Cost should be 20 for the haul up and 10 for sledge rental. http://www.obergoms.ch/schlitteln.php for more runs; take the train to Oberwald then wait for the quad to pick you up.

I'm trying to plan a sledding trip for my sweetie and me... | | | | | Went to Melchsee-frutt for sledding yesterday, and it was excellent. Really long run that drops down through 800m, took us about 1/2 hour to complete with a couple of crashes.
Word of warning though, the run gets very crowded towards the end of the day, as it's also used as a ski out.
Don't think the site mentions it, but to get there by public transport, you need to get a ticket to Stockalp. Take the train to Sarnen and a bus takes you the rest of the way.
You should also book a sled in advance, we got there at lunch, and no sleds were left, we sat and had lunch, and eventually some people returned some.

Any sledging runs around Zürich that people could recommend, got my god-daughter over on the weekend and I'm thinking sledging will be a good way to knacker her out.

I was in Elm last Saturday. The snow is a bit heavy towards the end and the track is sometimes bumpy, but the kids who were there did like it. I just wouldn't recomend it for a complete beginner at the moment.

I would highly recommend Arosa.
Its easily accessable by car and train (both via Chur).
