Sledding-Day Trip near Zurich?

Are there any excellent locales particularly just for sledding that are close by to Zurich? Ie, a train-ride of 1hr or less?

So I know Flumsberg is a good spot for skiing.... but we want the sledding excitement for some non-skiing friends visiting.

Re: Sledding-Day Trip near Zurich?

Flumserberg also has nice slopes for sledding. A rental service is also available. if the snow conditions are good, Uetliberg is also a good choice. Other possibilities are Heidiland, Engelberg, Rigi

Re: Sledding-Day Trip near Zurich?

Engelberg has a 3.5 km long sledding slope, a little bit icy now, but just great!

I was also there last week-end, loved it.

Re: Sledding-Day Trip near Zurich?

Flitzbach on the Walensee is a great place to sledge. 6 km long course, a Würstli and Glühweine cafe half way down, and best of all no ponces on skis or gangsta dudes on snowboards. You take a chair-lift to the top, and you can hire sledges.
Last time I went it was full of families and kids having a whale of a time.
Nice too because it's what the Americans would call a real 'Mom & Pop' operation, fun in the snow without the poseurs.

Cheers

Jim

I would say Filzbach it is just right. There are no spots you have to get off and push and there are a two short slightly steeper hills to get your heart racing. Last year my husband was with our 4yo son and I had my 2yo daughter (both had helmets). And you can get off and take the lift back up and do it again - bonus. This year my son (now 5) will have his own sled and my husband will take our daughter (and I will be waiting at the bottom with my big pregnant belly)

Of course if you want some exercise before you slide (ie walking up the hill) and being kid friendly, last year we visited Einsiedeln. I had my 2yo on the sled that I had to pull up the hill, which was quite exhausting.

wintersport is only sport if you walk up the hill. there's no sport in just sliding down

Re: Sledding-Day Trip near Zurich?

Uetliberg does not rent sleds.

We went to Pilatus, by Lucerne (a 40 min drive from Zurich).

This was my first time sledding in Switzerland and it's an entirely different experience from anywhere else I've been.

It's CHF10 (with Halbtax) for a one-way ride up to the top of the moutain by gondola- this alone is worth the trip for scenery (don't mistakenly get off at the stop halfway).

You can rent sleds at the top of the mountain- it's around CHF10 (plus deposit).

It's a 6 km run with some short walking parts in between and it took us about an hour to make it to the bottom.

It was exhilirating, beautiful, dangerous, painful and fun at the same time.

However, after the many wipeouts we took on the way, one time was enough for us.

You can return the sleds at the bottom.

A helmet is not a bad idea, as the sleds go fast and they are hard to control. Goggles are also good for the spray from other sleds.
A sled with a cushion is an even better idea.

Anyone know if the Uetliberg sledging run is open today? I have called the number 0800 588 588 but the recorded message is in such a strong dialect I can't translate.

Cheers.
