Staying in a small town between Aarau and Zurich. Will have a rental car and one free day.

Is the Matterhorn a practical day trip? It appears it would be difficult. Are there closer alternatives to seeing the Alps without spending the entire day on the road?

It takes quite a while to get to the Matterhorn from Aargau. It is a really nice train ride though that I could highly recommend - just not for a day trip.
The closest mountains are in central Switzerland, so maybe try out Pilatus, Rigi or Titlis. It takes about 2 hours to get there by car, depending upon the traffic.

I concur, there are many other nice places to see the Alps that are much closer to Aargau and are nearly as nice as Zermatt with its Matterhorn. Taking a quick look at Luzern and heading up either Rigi or Pilatus would certainly be a nice day trip. Have fun!

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I think we will travel closer. 2 hours spazierenfahren to the mountains sounds perfect.

I suppose it is still skiing season and weekend traffic will be heavy in some areas?
