Hi all,

Planning a trip to Switzerland in the coming year with my wife. Instead of going to some commercial website like travelocity or whatever, I want to come right to the horse's mouth for hotels in the major Swiss cities.

We are looking for cheapest places to stay in the best locations in these cities. Obviously, "cheap" is subjective especially by Swiss standards, but we're looking for the best buys for a location where we can easily explore the city (preferably by foot, but public transportation is ok too).

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

With a dollar whose value is still on the weak side "cheap" may translate to "expensive" on your side of the pond so be prepared for a little sticker-shock when checking hotel prices in Switzerland. With that said here's a link to get you started:

We've found some great places to stay for decent prices via the "Swiss Budget Hotels" website (www.rooms.ch).

Cool link, thought I'd give it a try and on my very first search for a room for one night in Zurich for 2 I came up to with a room for 356.-chf.
yeap... that's a "budget" hotel in Switzerland..!

The Easyjet Hotel in Basel is pretty good. My parents have stayed there a couple of times and it is easily walking distance to the centre of town:

They also have a hotel in Zurich but I don't know how good it is.

The ibis chain offers pretty competitive rates.

backpackers.ch lists backpacker accomodations, the private rooms in these are generally quite good and clean.

Theres is a hotel in the Ibis/Novotel complex that is even cheaper then Ibis.

Try: www.hostelworld.com. Not just hostels but some cheap hotels, too. Pretty reliable and full of users' comments.
Failing that, there's always www.myswitzerland.com but it would take you a lot longer to spot suitably cheap places.
