| | | Van Gogh in Basel - Has anyone been / does anyone want to go?
Has anyone been to the Van Gogh exhibition in Basle? I am thinking of either just going myself or organizing an event on EF, so I would be interested to know if anyone has been and can share information:
- Is it very crowded?
- How good are the guided tours?
- Any time that one should seek to get tickets for or avoid (you have to buy tickets for a time slot and can buy in advance)?
- Would you recommend it?
And, anyone else interested in going? I am in Zurich, so we could take the train there from Zurich.
Best
Idgie

i have not been and will most likely wait a bit as i go by there most days and see a line. not a big line.....though i am unsure of how these special exhibits work in the europe still....in my experience waiting a month or so until the crowds clear is usally a better way to go....but that's me....i like to go in the middle because everyone is excited at the beginning and all the people who 'forgot' to go rush to see it before its over.
my two cents.

Will these be his original paintings or prints framed to look original.

I was there last Saturday. It was pretty crowded, but not a long line for the ticket. Well worth a look.

I haven't been yet, but I saw that you can get a discount for the train journey if you are going to see the exhibition.

I went to the exhibition on Thursday- Between Earth and Heaven.
It was really great.
It features a thematically concentrated body of works from every creative period of the famous master.
They have managed to gather around 100 paintings from all over the world.
The Exhibition Started on 26th April and will end on the 27 September so there is still plently of time to visit. I think that it is best to visit on a weekeday rather than a weekend.
[Removed ebay link]
I believe entry to the exhibition cost me around CHF 30 for the day, which I think is relatively reasonable.

Ohh.... I would be very interested on visiting it, too. Maybe if a few of us are interested, we could do a guided visit?

I haven't been to the Van Gogh exhibition in Basel, but I heard that there were long queues, at least a month ago.
I was at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and was amazed by the paintings. They even had sculptures from Van Gogh. This was an unique and fascinating experience for me.
Since I haven't been to the exhibition in Basel, I can just give advice for avoiding queues at the museum in Amsterdam. Fridays, they are open until 22:00. I went from 20:00-22:00 and this gave me enough time to look at
the Van Gogh collection and another modern collection on the topmost floor. At 20:00, I was the first in no queue at the ticket counter. The Dutch woman at the counter told me I had chosen the best time, esp. the most quiet time during the day!

I would wait until Art Basel is over, unless of course you fancy a hot and sweaty stampede in the collapsing lung of hell.
I have been told not to bother with guided tours, unless of course you'd prefer to be ushered about and shown things in other people's time.
They have the iPod type of guide, which is far less invasive.

Here's some information from a friend who works there:
- The least crowded time is between 5pm and 7pm
- Don't go on Mondays, as that's the day where all the schools go
- Don't go during Art Basel
Enjoy |

We went at 5pm a couple of Saturdays ago. It was an ideal time -- not at all crowded.
A fantastic collection not to be missed!

I visited a few weeks ago, on a weekday. Very enjoyable, concentrating on the landscapes so you will not see some other famous works (sunflowers series). No queues/crowds to speak of (perhaps avoiding by entering around lunchtime!
Booked both travel and museum entry via SBB.
Can't advise on tours, however, informative notes (including English translation ) are included in some rooms of the exhibit.
Enjoy your trip!

My sister and I went at the end of May. We bought tickets on the internet before and it gives you an entry time frame of one hour, but you can stay as long as you like. The ticket we bought include the guided tour which is only in English one time per day (I think it was at 1:00). If you buy online you just show up at your entry time (no need to wait in any lines).
We both really liked the tour, you do get shuffled around a bit, but after the tour you can reexplore at your own pace.
They talked about how the style and mood of his paintings changed. It was good to know what events were going on in his life when he painted certain works. We also learned some general things to look for in paintings which was good 'cause we're newbie art goers.
I don't know how good the audio tours are.

I haven't been yet but plan to go.
A couple of suggestions from my in-laws who have already gone.
As others have mentioned, if you book via SBB/CFF you have a sort of combo price and you can specify the hour you want to enter/see the exhibit, i.e. from 12:00 to 13:00. So when you arrive, you go right on in. They were a few minutes early and they were allowed in as there were not too many people ahead of them.
Secondly, they rented the headphones. They said it made all the difference. It is a type of iPod where you can input the number of the painting and get the details. Not sure if English is available but I would imagine so.
When in Basel, if you are really in a museum mood, there is also the Giacometti Exhibit at the Fondation Beyeler (Riehen/Basel). http://www.museenbasel.ch/en/institu...ls.php?id=1488 http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/news_dig...82548000&ty=nd
