Can anyone let me know the best and economical way to go to Sicily from ZRH?

I was invited by a friend to go to Sicily - she says they drive 5 hours to Genoa and then take the car-ferry which takes 24 hours (you get a berth on board)...

Helvetic airways fly to Palermo.

My friend (her father was originally from Sicily) says it's a big island and chaotic, and best to have a car to get around...really depends if where you are staying is close to the airport/seaport or not...

Any advice on flights from Basel to Sicily? I don't have a preference for which city to arrive as we would like to visit the islands (Aeoli islands). Thanks!

If you want the Aeolian islands, Catania (or maybe Palermo) are the only airports you can sensibly fly to (or Reggio Calabria if you don't mind an extra ferry). Prepare for a long slog at Milazzo from the train station to the harbour if you don't hire a cab.

BTW the Italian railways have withdrawn all night trains from north of Rome to Sicily. If you want to go by train, you now have to take a high-speed train to Rome and change there.

Buy a flight ticket Zurich - Palermo direct flight with Airberlin.

No transfers. No trains. It is a bit more expensive but it is the easiest way for sure.
