just take a nice walk about through the city and enjoy the wonderful architecture there.

Flamküche for lunch is a must, too

Re: Bern for a day

Did the same a few weeks back, our very touristy itinerary went something like this.

Einsteins House (OK for 20 minutes)

Visit the Munster and a walk up the Dom (Beautiful church if you like that sort of thing)

Lunch at the Old Tram Depot (near the new Bear Graben) very good beer brewed in their own brewery on site food and service was also good.

Walk by the river to the cluster of museums (Nat History, Army, Alpine etc)

Kids danced in the pavement fountains in front of a very grand building (National hall maybe)

Saw the ornate Glocken chime at 4.

Missed out on the Paul Klee Zentrum but that was recommended by someone on here.

Bears are not back until later this year but we had a lovely day
Hope you do too.

Cheers

Re: Bern for a day

Forgot to add if you are going by train the nicest route takes 20 minutes or so longer from Luzern via Langnau.

I second this. Of course walk down Spitalgasse and Marktgasse but don't forget to continue down Kramgasse towards the Munster and the Nydeggbrucke over the river. This eastern part of the old town is much less busy and very pretty. And don't forget to wander through the side streets. The old town is very compact so unless you're into shopping it won't take long to see it. So apart from the Munster itself I'd recommend the Bernisches Hitorisches Museum and the Kunstmuseum. Or if the weather's nice sit in one of the cafés on Barenplatz or Waisenhausplatz, have a beer and watch the world go by. If you like Italian there's a good place on Waisenhausplatz. Can't remember it's name but it's on the RHS as you walk away from the clock tower between Spitalgasse and Marktgasse.

Re: Bern for a day

Bern is my favourite town/city in Switzerland and I try to get there the odd day here and there through out the year. It's almost time for another visit methinks

If you get a nice day, it's so relaxing just to potter about, in and out of the cool shops, lovely restaurants, coffee spots.. I could go but I'll just be drooling.

Yeah, Pedro died about two months ago. So sad he didn't get to live in the new habitat.

The suggestions above are perfect. The beauty of Bern is that the centralized old town has most of the tourists sites and everything is within walking distance.

The Altes Tram Depot is a great lunch stop and they make their own beer but it also really touristy. There are a lot of restaraunts in town with more local flavor if that's your thing. I'd recommend the Schwellenmätteli Restaraunt under the Kirkenfeld Bridge for a nice lunchtime experience.

Also, the Bern Historical Museum is worthwhile if you have time. It's the big castle-looking building across the Aare from the Casino Platz.

Enjoy your day in Bern!
