| I would like to find a day hike close to Basel. Pref. no more than 1 hours drive.
Where should we go?

There are plenty of hikes in Baselbiet (trans: Basel connurbation) accessible by public transport.
Here is one of my favourite routes:

Also try taking the train out to Waldenburg and then following the Wanderweg signs to Waldweid which takes a couple of hours. The Berghut (trans: Mountain Hut) there run by volunteers from the Swiss Alpine Club is a nice place to have a kraftbrühe (trans: broth) and a beer while looking at the Alps and hearing the Alphorn players who occasionally turn up.
From Waldweid it takes 30 mins to walk to Wasserfallen - on the route I gave - where you can take the cable car or descend to places like Reigoldswil.
Alternatively have you looked at the Jubliaeumsweg (trans: celebratory footpath) -
http://www.wandersite.ch/Jubilaeumsweg.html . This is a roughly 60km trail created to celebrate Basel being 500 years in the Swiss Confederation. The route takes you through different parts of the area and is a good way to discover other interesting walking routes. The trail is divided into 5 sections, each of which may be completed within a day or half-day. We did this over several weekends when we first came to Switzerland and it was a great way to get the lay of the land.
Cheers,
Nick
