| | | Would like info on what to do and see in Zurich
I adore Zurich. I live in Basel and sometimes I go for one day. Now I would like to go on "holiday" to Zurich, maybe for a week, and visit everything and know as much as possible.
What wouldn't miss in the ideal EF's travelguide of Zurich?
I particularly love antiques, architecture, museums, but would be also curious about nightlife, if there's any...
thanks

I recommend the Natural History Museum of the University of Zurich and the Museum Rietberg.

One walk that is worth doing is to follow the Schanzengrabe from end to end. This little waterway is part of the former city defences and strectches from Hauptbahnhof to the lakeside. It passes the grounds of the Ethnological Museum which are now just a park but used to be the botanical gardens. There are still some greenhouses dating to those days though that you can go inside and see the wonderful things that grow there.
Some of the old city churches are well worth going inside. My favourite is the former choir of Predigerkirche which got separated from the main church after the Reformation (they built a big wall through the middle of the church) and the choir is now a music library. There is a separate entrance from the outside to get there. Take the lift to the top floor and admire the gothic ceiling.
Some of my favourite streets to wander about are in the Rindermarkt area of the old town. Some of these streets still have gas lighting which makes for a romatic feel at night. And of course there is the Twist ...
I'm not too much into clubbing myself so can't really offer musch advice there although I do understand there is a lot going on. Kaufleuten, Indochine are names that come to mind.
There are a number of good bars in the Niederdorf area. One of my favourites is the Splendide where you get live piano music most of the time.
In the summertime I also recommend catching the river boat from Landesmuseum and doing a round trip. You get to see the city from an unusual perspective.

If you are looking for something different (or enjoy Sauna) the Badi Enge must be good -- you can take a dip in the lake to cool down! http://www.tonttu.ch/contents/sauna.html | | This user would like to thank nanners for this useful post: | |

I don't want to open different posts about same topic, so take up this one (I've changed the title)
As I said maybe one million times here, I love Zurich.
My next obsession about it would be making a thematic trip, a visit following "dada" theme. I went to Cabaret Voltaire, of course. Now I would like to go and see all the places which had something to do with dadaism. Do you know if there are dedicated museums, for instance?
Or also, I'd like to see places where Tristan Tzara, or Arp, or Ball, or... used to live, or meet. Houses, restaurants, libraries, parks... I don't know.
Any suggestions?
And also, if somebody likes this idea and would like to join me in the trip... it would be great.
thank you
I am reading a short story about Zurich and dadaism by Friedrich Glauser. I looked for an English version but I couldn't find it here is the Italian.
I'm really sorry it's not in English, it's a very interesting and entertaining account of Zurich in 1917, with Max Oppenheimer and Tristan Tzara as main characters. Being Glauser a pretty interesting fellow himself.
The story starts describing the atelier of Oppenheimer, which was, he says, a pavillon behind the University of Zurich. First step of my dada trip: check if it's still there (but maybe, first understand where's this place...).

Hi psychodelicate,
try to find Künstlergasse 15a. Guess that's the Pavillon you are searching.
Some architecture: http://www.zuerich.com/en/page.cfm/z...culture_x/5030
Just a few steps from the pavillon.
Some art: http://www.kunstaspekte.de/index.php...&city=Z%FCrich
...not in Zürich, but I love it: http://www.varini.org/02indc/indgen.html

Be sure to stop by Fraumünster Church and check out the stained glass windows by Marc Chagall. They are beautiful and one of my favorite things in the city.

I live in Zürich and recently discovered that there is an interesting dinner experience - the fondue tram. It rattled by me one cold Saturday evening, and I have to say it looked it could be a blast to be on a cosy tram with some good food and wine and of course a view of (lots of) Zürich. I missed getting a reservation before Xmas but it runs until some time in Feb. Cost is CHF 96 if I remember correctly, without drinks.
p.s. Another unusual Zürich dining experience is the Blindekuh, a restaurant in total darkness with blind staff. This sounded gimmicky before I went, but I and everyone in my group enjoyed it.

| | | New Museum - ETH Zürich. Earthquakes, Volcanos etc. In the Swiss news recently is this Museum with an Earthquake Simulator. "focusTerra is an inspiring new museum which explains in an easily understandable way the geologic processes in and on our planet". It looks as if it might be worth a visit. They hadn't got around to teaching about Tectonic Plates and Tsunamis when I was at school. |

I don't know if your question is serious or not.
A Google search brings up the Moorland School -
" Plate tectonics is a relatively new theory and it wasn't until the 1960's that Geologists, with the help of ocean surveys, began to understand what goes on ..."
1960's was too late for me!
I think Tsunamis were only really 'recognised' in Japan at that time.

Yesterday I saw an article in 'blickamabend' showing this new Map '52X Zürich'. Lots of ideas for trips and things to see in this area.
On this link the page is shown in German, but the details on the map itself are in both German and English. Click on this text on the right of the page: Karte 52 x Zürich Vollversion (6193 KB)
If you live around here, it's worth having a look to see if there is anything going on in the Zürich region which you know nothing about.
The PDF is a bit large to print out (they said it, I didn't), but the map is available free, so pick one up if you get the chance!

A friend gave me an article, a couple of years ago, about new stained glass windows being made for a church or some similar building in Zurich ... details lost in the haze of an aging brain |

Honestly, I don't feel Zurich at all. The only place where it is sorta diverse and somewhat unique is Langstrasse.

Other windows in the same building are indeed by Augusto Giacometti, as you said.

Many thanks, and with the names of the artists I was able to find what I had read: Many-colored Glass -- Gerhard Richter and Sigmar Polke do windows.

You do realise of course, that although I have seen them, I couldn't remember the name of the artist either. I just Googled 'neue Fenster Kirche Zürich'!!
It doesn't work as well Googlling it in English though - then you get the Chagall windows in the Fraumünster.
