Château de Chillon - In the winter?

Hi all,

How difficult is it to visit and enjoy Chillon in the winter? Is it ice-cold in the various rooms? Is it fairly easy to walk around if there's a lot of snow on the ground?

I went in autumn and enjoyed it. Now I'd like to go again this weekend.

I wouldn't go at this time of the year.
It is cold now and it looks so much nicer when all the flowers are out and the sky is blue and warm.

Re: Château de Chillon - In the winter?

My memories of a very cold January visit are similar to those of NatsBrit. Brrrr.

If you do go, wear warm shoes because it was my feet that suffered the most and make plans to go straight to a warm cafe afterwards.

On the upside, visiting Chillon in the middle of winter will make you appreciate the creature comforts of modern day life. I remember thinking about how awful it would to have go to the bathroom with the cold winter wind blowing. If you've already visited Chillon and remember the WC in the castle, you'll understand what I mean.

most of the tour is inside, but as pointed out, you ought to wrap up. one thing to consider if you visit during this time of year is that it is hit and miss as to the quality of the view you get... for the past week or so, it's been rather hazy, and although you may not specifically be going to see the view of lake geneva, it does add to the ambiance of the chateau. on the flip side, it will probably be less busy than the warmer months.

Re: Château de Chillon - In the winter?

Chateau Chillon against the backdrop of the snow-capped alpes savoie; Rhone valley stretching away from the lake towards the white crests of the Dents du Midi and Dent du Morcle soaring up in the distance into a clear blue sky....pure magic!

In the clear winter air and provided the sky is clear blue (not like today), the photos will be awesome!

May be cold but nothing a hot chocolate laced with pear williams schnapps won't cure.

They may not have known where the wind was blowing from, but they would certainly have known where it ended up!

I have visited in the summer and it was great. I think that a winter visit would make an interesting comparison. Wrap up well. Hope you get a clear sunny day.
