What to see between Geneva and Lausanne?

Hi.

I am planning to go this saturday from zürich to geneva. Spend the day in geneva and then, at night take the autoway in the direction of Lausanne to spend Sunday in Yverdon and Bern.

So I am looking for a charm place (not expensive by the way) to spend the saturday night. I want to find someplace outside genva, if possible in one of those village around the autoway Geneva-Lausanne.

Any tips or recomendation? Any nice village to spend a couple of hours on sunday morning??

regards and thanks!

Re: What to see between Geneva and Lausanne?

Nyon lake side is not too bad, some hotels there I believe... if you're driving from Geneve to Lausanne, you should take the "Route du Lac" rather than the highway, this way you can see Versoix, Celigny Port, Nyon, Prangins, Rolle, Saint-Prex, Morges, Saint-Sulpice, and then past EPFL to Lausanne.

Some of that lake side road has a few good views, and most of the road can be driven fairly fast too so it won't be like you'll be stuck driving this part of the road for 3 hours...

Along the way IF you were hanging around, you could visit the Museum about Switzerland in Prangins, the Imperial Domain Golf Course with one of Napoleon's houses (as well as the "Toblerone", a bunch of war time triangular fortifications that were used to stop tanks from advancing... there's also bunkers around this area where I live, and there's a house on the side of the road which is a "fake" house can you spot it?), have an English fry-up breakfast at the Irish style "Fishermen's Pub" in Nyon (they have it once a month I think?), or enjoy a good Japanese dinner at Versoix before you leave on your trip (restaurant called Chez Uchino). But if all you're looking for is a hotel, then I'd say Nyon is probably your best bet... but you might find an "auberge" style tavern which is cheaper somewhere along the way.

Well, good luck and enjoy!

Re: What to see between Geneva and Lausanne?

You can get a hotel in Nyon (there is a lot more to find in Nyon, I do not know what is expensive for you..), this one is right next to the castle and then you can walk around Nyon on Sunday or zip to Prangins (2km) to see the castle and walk around the castle garden or the lake shore.

Or, you can sleep over in Morges, in Hotel de la Nouvelle Couronne , it is a nice hotel (we know it since we meet there for a book club and poetry club) with a neat quiet bar. You can then walk around Morges on Sunday, the lake shore, the little boulevard just outside of the hotel is really nice too (Grand Rue). There is a fabulous giant bakery/restaurant that serves fresh breakfast (Grand Rue). The service in Morges in both places was impeccable.

Yeah, they do that once a month if I am not mistaken, always at the end of the month? You would have to call them to see..There is also a fun flee market in Nyon every last sunday of the month.

I didn't know there is a lot to see in Gland, too..Wow, bunkers! I know ther is a fantastic playgroung in Gland, which I think the OP is not interested in

Re: What to see between Geneva and Lausanne?

I can recommend this B&B in Chéserex - just outside Nyon.

http://www.bnb.ch/index.php?p=page&id=363

Family run - retired English couple who have lived in Switzerland for many years. It's quiet, excellent breakfast and Inca, their dog, is a pure pleasure. Good views both of Jura, lake and Alps.

Yeah, there's a big line of Toblerone going south-east (from near the lake side) to north-west (near the mountain ridge). Parts have been removed due to roads, but it's still there, mostly hidden by the forest etc...

The bunkers can be seen on your right when driving to the golf course just past my house :P There's a lot of Toblerone just there as well.

The "fake house" is on the right hand side of the road when driving in the direction of Gland coming from Nyon, about 100m before the part where you drive to the Domaine Imperiale... the "windows" (hah) have red shades with white stripes on them. There's a panel with some text just outside the building explaining the use of the building in the war as well as a map of the Toblerone.

You can go walking in and on top of the bunkers if you're brave :P Maybe not too recommended however...

Oh, and the castle you posted above is where they have the Swiss History Museum

You should give us a tour of the bunker area, wow, we will trade it for a lunch, how about that...Or, a raclette! Didn't have it for a while, I am starting to have a raclette withdraval symptoms, you know, the salivating, haha.

The Pragnins casle is beautiful, we went when there was the 10 000 lumieres, it was so fun (and so cold ).

Re: What to see between Geneva and Lausanne?

The bunkers are worth visiting in summer... right now it's a bit too cold. Besides, then you can go for a walk around the golf course as well whilst you're at it (tried it in winter, just not the same thing).

And speaking of raclette, gosh, now I suddenly want to eat it as well =\ NOW LOOK WHAT YOU DID!!! waaaaaaahhhh, gotta go shopping for cheese.

I'm sorry, I don't understand where you are saying this line of "Toblerone" is. Could you be more specific? It sounds very interesting.

It would be nice for me to suggest something clever to my wife for a change.

Oh, yeah, live in St. Prex.

Thanks,
Brian.

Re: What to see between Geneva and Lausanne?

Hey Brian,

A toblerone is actually a pyramid shaped tank trap...perhaps you already know that. I didn't, until I moved to Gland. Anyhoodle...there are long lines of toblerone that run about the Nyon region. I'm unsure if they stretch as far as St. Prex. They are super interesting to look at and you can hike along the path. Clearly, it is a bit more comfortable when the weather is a bit warmer.
There is a bit of information here:

Cheers,
Rebecca

Re: What to see between Geneva and Lausanne?

Looks like we should organize an EF tank-trap field trip in the summer, haha..With a BBQ afterwards or chilling by the lake, sounds like an idea

Just wonder, though, how safe those Tobleronies are for jumpy kids..
