| | | Good vacation spots in Europe?
Just did our Europe wedding and looking for a cheap place to Honeymoon with a budget of about 1500 Francs. Anyone know a good place that wonīt be too much of a hassle? I want someplace that isnīt too hot, speaks either English or German, enough to get by, and not too far by plane, because I have a 1 year old. Anyone know if Eastern Europe is cheap and can I get in and out ok?

I've heard good things about Estonia, but never been there.

what kind of accomodation are you looking for?
what duration of stay?
US passport gets you into most Schengen countries ok I believe?
Considered Northern Italy? Of course the touristy places will all speak some English - same goes for Med coast through France....

I did Croatia last year and it was so wonderful I'm going back this year - your German will be fine for the northern areas. We were in Opatje and then took a ferry to the island of Cres.

Accomodation doesnīt matter, because we are used to doing hostels, so I can always hostel it. I figure we are only going to sleep there anyways and use the rest of our budget to see things. Duration of stay between 3-8 or 9 days. We might even do 2 places if we can get it cheap enough, maybe 2 nights in paris and 3 in Vienna or something. I was particularly wondering about places like Croatia though, I hear you get like 5 or so kroatian kanas for a franc, but what can you buy with that? I know for example in Hungary it is 173 forints for a franc and a .5 L bottle of Lowenbrau there is 119 Florits, so it seems like a good deal, but not sure on going with a U.S. passport.

We stayed in an apartment - fairly basic, double bedroom, shower, kitchen area, garden with barbecue grill and about 30 metres from beach - it was 27 Euros per night for the apartment - they tend to price a lot of stuff in Euros despite not being in the Euro yet. I can't remember the prices in restaurants but there was great variety - I remember being pleased at how inexpensive it seemed. Opatje was much more expensive but Cres was much cheaper - what I do remember was going to a very up-market fish restaurant in Opatje and ate scallops, sea bass, good white wine and I think that it came to about 80 Euros for 2 of us - and that was much more expensive than anything else we had.

I am now thinking about the train pass for 3 countries deal. My choices would be between Germany, Denmark, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Spain, and Slovakia, but it would have to be 3 countries that I can get to through Switzerland and without having to pass through another country to get there, a chain. Like Germany, Austria, and Hungary. I know I want Germany, my wife wants Austria, so that leaves me with either Denmark, Hungary, and France for my top 3. I would just use hostels. Anyone know anything about Hungary or Denmark? My wife likes France, but I want to avoid it if I can.

I'd check also some last minutes trips in case you don't want to do cultural stuff - you should be able to buy an all-inclusive to Greece, Djerba, Sharm el-Sheik, Algarve and stay within your budget.
Try these http://www.helvetictours.ch/index-fr.php http://www.frantour.ch/fr/ http://www.reisennetto.ch/
good luck

I'm not sure why you'd want to avoid France, it's a great place for a holiday and right next door. I'd choose Austria over Germany any day. Denmark? I thought you were on a budget?

Trying to avoid all Euro countries, cause it takes about 2 francs for a euro, so Denmark uses Kronars you get 5 to 1 franc. France, because I donīt know French and her french is not good, so I want to avoid France. She wants to see Vienna, because she never has, but I personally think we could skip it. She wants to avoid Germany, because she thinks it is boring, but I figure it will give me a turn to use some German. Is Denmark expensive?

your logic has lost me. €uro-zone includes Germany and Austria. Exchange rate is a little over 1― francs to the €. No matter how many Krona you get, you'll be able to spend them quickly and things may be more expensive in real terms.

The exchange rate of currencies has absolutely nothing to do with the relative costs in those countries. By your logic everything in Denmark should be cheap, and everything inside the eurozone should be expensive? Think again...
Agreed it can sometimes be a problem in France without French, but I don't speak any french but always manage to get by. I'd agree with your wife on Germany, remember that you can also use German in Vienna. It's a nice city, but can be very pricey (like most big cities). You might want to do your research a little more carefully before making the decision.
You might find that a flight package somewhere works out far cheaper than catching the train to a few different cities!

I know Germany, Austria, and France use the Euro, what I meant was I didnīt want ALL three of the places to use the Euro, I want to hit someplace cheap in Eastern Europe, so I can eat at a fancy restaurant. And I actually thought it was closer to 2 with some of the exchange rates I seen on some internet shopping sites. And she has been my wife for 4 years, we did our first wedding in the states, this one was for her dad to be able to attend and we got cheated on the first honeymoon, so we want to do something special. I donīt know about my wife, but my daughter might be upset if I bring home an Italian girl. lol

If you wonder about needing a visa to visit a country, check the embassy website, you'll find out everything you need to know.

I heard Slovenia is nice, lots of culture, beaches as it is on the Mediterrenean, and its cheap. Maybe have a browse through the lonely planet in a large bookshop.
