How do you tell the difference ?
i examined the pixel pattern under an 8x loupe.

the led models have pixels in a normal rectangular pattern whereas the oled models have pixels in an offset 'brick wall' style pattern.

EDIT: the viewing angle is very good and the major limiting factor is probably the reflectivity of a touchscreen rather than the display technology used.

Re: Android 2.1 phone for CHF 100.- on PAYG

This forum is trying to figure out the specs of this phone as sold in different countries -

http://android.modaco.com/content/zt...on-the-market/

I am curious about what you get from OK Mobile - the previous posts says a TFT screen (contradicting the modaco forum). Can anyone who has actually got one of these phones from OK Mobile tell how much RAM they have - 256MB or 512MB? It seems to make a difference when trying to run a newer Android version on it.

I think only Hungary, Greece India and China got 256 so far.

Re: Android 2.1 phone for CHF 100.- on PAYG

I finally bought one to myself as well

However, coming back to my "favourite" SAR matter, I tend to believe they put on "ok"s website a conservative value or something (as they did for the TFT screen as well maybe?), because when I look at orange.ch (http://shop.orange.ch/en/android/ora...invt/10058414/ ,just go to the "specifications" tab) they give a lower value (1.35 W/kg) for the same unit.

In theory you get it from certain Kiosks.

Thanks guys for the tip.

I say in theory because their delivery channel needs some work! I went out to get one today found a Kiosk that had one but when I asked for one (and handed over my FULLY completed application form and ID) the attendant looked at me with the kind of sour face I'd expect if I'd asked her for a perverse sexual favour and refused to sell me one today since it would take "zein minuten" and suggested I come back on "Montag". When pressed further she helpfully suggested "Morgen!"

There was no apology, no sympathy, just a dog ugly look and off I went having wasted a chunk of my time.

Wow, I went to the Horgen kiosk and the lady there gave me the same exact attitude down to saying come back tomorrow (even though she had 2 in stock)

k kiosks are always too busy places... especially if you end up at the ones at your Bahnof during the evening... I got mine from the Press&Books store at the Bern Bahnof... although these stores serve the same purpose as the k kiosks, maybe people just do not end up going to them for their lotto tix and cigarettes...

Re: Android 2.1 phone for CHF 100.- on PAYG

Hi everyone,
I have been following this thread because I want to buy my first "sophisticated" phone (I've always had simple candybar phones with just phone/text function, never even seen an mms). I actually live in the Netherlands (where they are not for sale, nor in Belgium where I am from) but my partner lives in Zurich so I am considering asking him to buy one for me.

I see from the offer on okmobile that it comes without sim-card. So you guys are all buying it without sim-card and just use your own sim-card in it (after unlocking). So you can unlock without having the okmobile sim card? => Sorry! I can see from posts around 15.12.2010, 14:51 that you have to buy a sim-card and the best solution is with a new number. Still wonder if you do need the sim-card to unlock or just your own?

Have you tried it with a foreign sim-card? Do you think it would be a problem? I see people buying it in the UK and taking it back to their home country and I have not read any complaints...

Does unlocking and orange-debranding mean that you lose the garantee?

Sorry if these are stupid questions...

Its in this zip file http://www.okmobile.ch/docs/reg_agb.zip

Pleased to say I managed to get one. In the end I felt sorry for the poor woman who turned me away on Saturday - they launched these things last week without proper support - she was stuck on her own trying to deal with lottery addicts, newspaper buyers, chewing gum chewers and folk like me trying to sign a phone contract! Could have done with some extra support for launch week methinks. Anyway the phone seems good enough - and an absolute bargain for 100 francs.

As far as the camera goes - do not buy it for the camera - a CHF100 camera is not great and this does a whole lot more besides. But as a phone with some apps to play with it is great value.

Perfect, thanks!

You have to also buy an Ok mobile PAYG sim for chf 10. So the real cost is chf 110,- for the phone. You don't need to ever use the Ok sim it if you don't want but maybe it's useful for when you visit your partner in Switzerland.

Whats the camera quality like just out of interest?
camrea is 3.2mp AF and is pretty crap. the AF mechanism seems to be pretty loud and 'heavy'. i switched it to fixed focus mode.

i'm also very impressed with the screen. not too far off the resolution of the ipod touch 4g - the pixels are barely discernible. if it had a bit more horizontal resolution, it would have the same 'pixel-less' quality of the ipod touch 4g. but still, the screen is very sharp.

feels good to hear that there are others as excited as I am with their steal of the week/month/year... so now I have been contemplating on uploading one of the customised ROMs on the internet onto my phone... I know this model is the TFT one which makes my options limited, but just in case anybody else has already done so, I just wanted to know which one did you use... I am referring to this modaco page...

You have to be a swiss resident to buy this phone. (Or someone who works here and lives in a neighboring country) They want to see your residence permit before a phone will be sold.

Yes you will lose your guarantee if you debrand

Not true. And specifically in this case, the form that has to be filled in has a dedicated section for people with residence outside of Switzerland

Mobile phones (rather SIM cards) can only be bought when you present some ID and this is to keep tags on them, supposedly for crime purposes. You can use any ID - even a passport from a foreign country. If crime happens, interpol will track you down I got a free Aldi SIM last week and a photocopy of my passport sufficed.

I'll be tempted to install this one:

MoDaCo Custom Froyo ROM Alpha3-4 (based on new Chinese leak) TFT/OLE (2.2 Froyo) provided by Paul - Based on the latest R4 leaked Chinese Rom - Full up to date Google apps, Google account setup via WiFi, Tweaked to show full market, Set to English by default, Updated RIL and removed 'SecuritySMS',UK English for Voice Dialler, Updated lockscreen and homescreen background,su / Superuser.apk root, Support for running scripts from /etc/init.d at startup, Spare parts included + Lots More - Alpha 3 prebake - Alpha 4 Kitchen Only

but it seems you have to pay something to get access to it.

i'm tempted to get a second one but feel a bit sheepish going back again

Im only going by what I was told at my kiosk. My US passport was not accepted as ID. They wanted my ID card. I read the papers again and you are right, EU people are allowed to buy it. Non-EU cannot. (unless they live here)

hehehe wouldn't we all ... anywhoo you got it wrong with the payment part... if you become a paid member of this forum then you can get access to the online kitchen and customise your ROM... however the alpha3 version (alpha4 is latest) is right there for you to download...

I was thinking of using a 2.1 version first... don't want to be the bravest man in town... once I get the hang of the procedure, I'll go for the 2.2 for sure...
