| | | Re: Now watch NetFlix in CH through your computer or XBox. | Quote: | | | | | You should be able to get it to work. Without changing (or hacking) the Apple TV, you'd need to use another computer with a wired ethernet adapter, and a wireless adapter. You connect the computer via wired Ethernet to the Internet and then connect to a VPN service in the US. Then you can 'bridge' or 'share' that connection to your wireless. The computer basically creates a wireless LAN that the Apple TV can then access. You also need to tell the computer to direct all traffic to the wired/VPN connection. I can look for a link if you're really interested. Any computer with a wired and wireless Ethernet port should be able to do it.
Regards,
Dan | | | | | Please forgive me for my ignorance, but I'm not 100% sure that all ISPs actually will allow this, so maybe check up on it before getting all excited .
Stupid question, but when setup as above, doens't this mean that your whole wifi network is going to be a non "local" IP network and only drive on the VPN's IP address?

I suppose an ISP could block access to VPNs but I haven't heard of any doing it yet. People use VPNs to access work all the time so I would think that would cause a lot of customer complaints.
I wouldn't recommend doing this all the time, only when you need it to mask your IP address.

Dan

| | | Re: Now watch NetFlix in CH through your computer or XBox. | Quote: | | | | | Hello Folks,
1) Connect Xbox to your WiFi Internet connection at home. If you are streaming through it.
2) From your computer go to the website USVideo.ca (it's a Canadian website that provides your secondary DNS as a US ip address - hence why you'll be able to watch Netflix, Hululu or other videos that usually ban you from watching it)
3) USVideo.ca has a free 1 week subscription to it's services atm. Just input your e-mail address and then proceed with the instructions to change your DNS to a US ip address (USVideo has instructions for most modems through their site). After that if you want to use it it will cost USD 4.99 per month.
4) BAM! You will be able to stream any US only videos through the internet and by modifying the modem IP address will automatically enable you to use XBOX 360 Netflix to stream through your TV *but please make sure that you purchase a gold membership + have a US Xbox 360 account* - without the Gold Membership, no streaming for you.
If you are an XBOX user, this will also (with the gold membership) allow you to access Zune, which for around 10-18$ each you can stream new released US movies and television shows (I am enjoying the 5th season of 30 rock as we speak). - It's a little higher than a US movie theater, but cheaper than a Swiss one. Total Costs are:
Xbox 360 Yearly membership bought in the US from amazon.com = $40.00
Subscription to USVideo.ca per month = $4.99
Subcription to Netflix per month = $8.00
Enjoy!!! | | | | | This is the only part of the post i found not to be true...I almost went out and bought a wireless receiver for my xbox until i realized you can just connect it to the router directly!
Anyways...it was really easy so I give you a huge thanks! It has a very quick speed and unlike with strongvpn i wasnt locked out of espn3!!!
I had managed to connect the xbox to netflix before by connecting it to my pc and making a bridge connection to strongvpn.....but that proved to be too mucha hassle. Thanks so much for this tip!!!

Somewhat related - will my PS3 with iplayer still work here, or will the iplayer feature recognise that its in CH and block all the content?

Dan | | | | | Hi Dan
I meant that using your PC/MAC as a wireless (VPN) router could be a breach of the T&C. It's a little like using your iPhone as a hot-spot. For instance my French Orange subscription (unlimited data) won't allow for it, while my Swiss Orange subscription will.
When living in Paris, I did try the trick as described and got a warning on my Mac that this was not allowed by some ISP's and that one should check first with the provider (never got it to work anyway ).
I'm now ready to give it another try so I can get BBC iPlayer on my PS3 when my stuff arrives next week |

I have tried the VPN trick with a spare Mac but never got it to work |

Okay I now have Netflix on my laptop and when I connect my laptop to the TV it works... but I have not been able to get Netflix directly from my internet connected TV because Samsung doesn't have a Netflix App for my model (presumably because model is for European Market and Netflix not available). Anyone have a work around for this, aside from the connection to the PC?

Speed: Excellent, I do have a fast braodband connection, but am not choked down on the US side. Movies, and games download really fast...the streaming is near HD in quality. At least on Netflix I get the best quality that is available
Content: Wow...Netflix is ok, the movie selection is not optimal, and its surprising what they do and dont have. They have a lot of interesting documentaries that i never would have found otherwise. Hulu Plus is also great as I just subscribed. I can watch the entire library of a whole lot of NBC, ABC shows. Very satisfied with it.
ESPN3+ is the best thing though, if you like sports then you will love this channel. I was able to watch all the EUro basketball and football games the past 2 nights..you can also watch split screen so you can easily toggle.
All in all a fantastic thing and really cheap. I do recommend the provider

What is a little weird...when I go to the zune store and try to buy/rent a movie....its not letting me saying the product is not available in my market.
Otherwise everything else works as if I live in the US

So I guess the DNS Proxy doesn't work for any of the Zune content, or buying MS points, or games...however for all other content it is still good.
Microsoft has been the only one to figure it out so far

^^ Good to know. My wife and I followed this tack, and have been able to access Netflix and a few U.S. TV network websites online with it. I had thought about getting a used Xbox 360 to access Microsoft's content, but I'll just hold off...

The trouble usually with buying or using all MSFT content (even playing some games online on Xbox LIVE) is because it gets associated with your xbox account. During your set up of your xbox account you have to put your address among other things which gets associated with all MSFT content. So it will not allow you to access any content if you are not registered in the US. What we had to do was to call Xbox tech support and tell them that we have now moved back to the US and we need to change our account to reflect that. It was a horrible time to explain to them and get things done but with a lot of arguments back and forth good ol' american customer service came through and we switched our account. So we are now able to do all that you have mentioned.
Worth a shot if you have the time and want to put the effort plus if you have a VoiP phone at home which can sit on for hours to argue with them | Quote: | | | | | So I guess the DNS Proxy doesn't work for any of the Zune content, or buying MS points, or games...however for all other content it is still good.

Yesterday an update was offered by Microsoft and I downloaded it thinking it was going to be the new Microsoft content. (HBO 2Go, etc)
However since the update all the pluses of usvideo.ca have dissapeared. Hulu Plus no longer works, Netflix hangs while logging in....I think MSFT has caught on and is disabling this loophole
It was fun while it lasted...I will have to do a true VPN connection now

If you decide to go for the vpn route, check out hidemyass.com. It's perfect with netflix.

I've been using StrongVPN for a couple of months now and it works great. 24/7 service, fast speeds.
My set up is a StrongVPN wireless router (I got it in the US before moving here) and a MacBook Pro connected to a 27" Apple Cinema Display. We don't own a conventional television. The wifi router operates parallel frequencies of 2.4ghz for the iphone, ipod, etc. and 5ghz for the computers. This way all devices with a wifi connection are behind the VPN. There is no individual switching or connecting...makes life easy!
The cool thing for me (not terribly tech savvy) is that the VPN software is built in by Sabai Technology. You simply go to a webpage for the router and turn on or off the VPN. I also can flip over to a UK ip if I want to watch BBC content. $55/year and worth every penny. http://www.strongvpn.com/ http://www.sabaitechnology.com/Links.../svpne3000.htm
I have no ties to these firms, just sharing good products and services. I agree with the other posters...trying to exploit a loophole usually gets the loophole closed. VPN is really the only secure method.
P.S. On public wifi spots, I can activate my VPN through the computer and have a perfectly safe connection as well. Added bonus!

Do you know of any routers that will allow you to set up this VPN proxy easily with a web address and password?
I have been trying to find one for ages.... Router / Proxy :Calling all tech-heads, nerds and hackers...
Cheers in advance!

Strong VPN for the win.
It is 10x better than any solution out there and their support is, well, strong. They can dial into your cpu and edit anything.
It is more than worth the 50$ per year.
I watch hulu, netflix etc.. They can even set it up on your ipad or itouch etc..

Look for a router that uses DD-WRT firmware. From my research that is the firmware that will best allow you to setup a username and password directly in your router and allow all your devices to be used over a VPN.
The above router comes pre-installed with dd-wrt on it. If you look on this website however, you can search for your router and it tells you whether you can flash it with dd-wrt software. I didnt have the patience for that, and i wanted a router asap, so i bought the buffalo one.
