Tesco Internet Phone in Switzerland (UK phone here in CH) - Page 2

Just managed to get my tesco internet phone working on my iphone through an app SIP Softphone, (GBP 0.59p for the app) as long as the app is open and you have a wireless network. For those who are interested, use domain, sip.tescointernetphone.com username and password. Pretty useful when travelling and even give us another 'mobile' phone around the house.

We use thi service as well - it has not worked a couple of times, due to an outage on their network, but very reliable, and as mentioned above, all calls to the UK are free, which is excellent if you need to call 'home' for a natter...

I'm trying to find the cheapest way to call UK mobile numbers from here in Switzerland...Anyone know why with the tesco one it's 10p per minute to UK mobiles....but only 2p a minute to chinese/American/etc mobiles

It's a similar thing with my lebara sim card...UK is CHF 0.09 landline/CHF 0.29 mobile ...USA and other places it's CHF 0.09 to either landline or mobile!

Are we really that expensive/behind the times in the uk??

OK, I spoke too soon - my Vonage Portal has just had a hissy fit, and now will not connect to the Vonage server.

Vonage will call you back on a Swiss landline, which has saved a merry fortune in call charges calling a UK Freephone number, so that is good.

Looks like I have to have a replacement Voange Portal (the 'router' which makes the VOIP work, so this can only be delivered within the UK, and can only be couriered by CityLink - so therefore someone has to be around to sign for it for the delivery.....

SO, if things do go wrong, and new need new kit, it can be a pain in the arse.

Fortunately, our number is not used on a regular basis, and it is more of a nice to have over here.

I would suggest that you have a back up plan in case the VOIP hpone system does crack the sads and does nto work - Skype (much to my surprise) is a very good alternative, but limitation is that you have to be by your PC to communicate. In saying that I have had a crystal picture when chatting to my mate in Oz.....

Technology - never trust it, always have a back up!

There are too many providers giving UK numbers. sipgate.co.uk is a more cost efficient provider of a uk number. For dial out there are definetly better deals with voipbuster or such.

People also should look for alternatives for the Swisscom and Cablecom's "Phone Tax" and use instead equivalent service from providers like sipcall.ch that provide you Swiss numbers over all the country. Rarely have I had any downtime with them.
