| | | Will a TV bought in England work in Switzerland, and vice versa?
A friend of mine wants to bring his year old LG flatscreen tv over from england... he has just moved to switzerland.
he asked me if it would work. i think that most recent TV´s will work with pal, secam, and ntsc, right???? So he should be able to simply bring it over, plug it in and go? Anyone know the answer for sure?
On the other hand, im contemplating buying a new flatscreen here at the end of the year... if i should move back to england next year, there shouldnt also be any issue with me bringing it back and using it there, right?

Most manufacturers make the same tv for all markets, and just supply different plugs.
I would think the LG would work here no problems, and vice versa

Should add, the TV may not be NTSC, as you're in the PAL region. That's not an issue between here and the UK.
If you want to guarantee your TV will work, got to the setup screen and see if Switzerland is listed when setting your country.

| | | Re: Will a TV bought in England work in Switzerland, and vice versa? My experience of 4 years ago with a modern UK Sony TV is that it did not work here with the standard coaxial aerial input as the 'British' tuner wasn't able to receive Swiss channels.
I got round this by buying a cheap Swiss VCR and using that as my tuner, connecting it to the TV using a SCART lead.
You can acheive the same thing by signing up to one of the various digital TV services like Bluewin TV, where the digital box connects to your TV with a SCART lead. | | This user would like to thank Brian for this useful post: | |

My Toshiba 37inch TFT screen which is probably about 2 years old now, worked a treat over here. I didn't bother changing the power plug as it was moulded and might invalid the warranty. So I just changed to a swiss plug on my UK multi-plug adaptor which runs the TV and media centre etc.
The TV picked up about 50 swiss channels from the TV point in our flat so no problems there.
The only thing that is a bit pointless is the free-view part of the TV as I don't think they have that over here.
We then bought a Sat and HD receiver and can now watch all the English Channels in HDMI quality - much better.

| | | Compatability: Bringing a UK TV to CH
OK, I'me sure this question has been asked and answered, but I couldn't find it in my search.
Is my UK TV compatable in Switzerland? I've heard some advice saying yes, because it's PAL, and others saying Switzerland uses PAL.
Has anyone done it? I love my 42" plasma as much as my kids ... |

12 years ago, in the UK, I had cable TV. My expensive wide-screen Nokia TV could receive all the cable channels going, but the allegedly matching video recorder could only see the standard BBC/ITV/C4 combination. | Quote: | | | | I got round this by buying a cheap Swiss VCR and using that as my tuner, connecting it to the TV using a SCART lead.

The only snag was that the TV needed to be on during recording.

The difference is (AFAIR) that the sound signal is placed "on the other side" of the picture, perhaps it goes with driving on the left
In practical terms it means you may have to choose between having sound or picture - that is the case with our 1995 Toshiba. It is hooked up to our sons PS2 via Scart, that works fine.
Our equally ancient B&O from Denmark just works - same flavour PAL.
I could imagine that more modern TVs can cope with both flavours, as well as SECAM and NTSC (Never Twice Same Color).

We arrived here with a Dutch telly. It works in the UK and it works here. It should go both ways.

Mine worked fine. Find your setup screen and see if it has switzerland listed as an option.

Check if your TV has a Duel Language function as most of the Swiss, French and some Italien channels show films and TV shows in the original language. (Lost/Prison Break/24 etc..)
And if you dont want the hassle and expense of getting Sky, another option is to get a small grey digi-box which is next to nothing and you will get BBC1,2,3,4 etc... ITV1, 2 &3 etc Film Four and various other channels.
I pay about 5CHF a month for the card and installation is plug and play. |

Hi
Best thing to do is call the manufactures technical dept. to be sure as i did last time i moved some years ago. I didn't take my UK tv as i would have needed some sort adapter or something it just wasn't worth it. But as i say that was around 6 , 7 years ago, things could have changed with technology.
Its no point in bringing it and hoping, best to check before. TV's are pretty ok prices here anyway.

Check the frequency bands. If the S channels are not included in the TV tuner, then you may not be able to directly watch certain programs. Hence, the workarounds proposed of using an external tuner to pipe the picture into the TV.

The only problem I had was that my TV didn't have a SCART plug in, so i had to get a SCART to RCA adapter. Easy peasy.
