i dont know how many people here use bit torrent, but ive been using it for a few years to get all my television requirements, particularly from a site called www.uknova.com

however uknova doesnt allow commercially available content, but its still good for tv that is currently being broadcasted.

there is a new (4 months old) site which is really excellent though, which is another uk-only tv site, called www.thebox.bz

thebox does allow any uk tv content and has some really wonderful british tv golden oldies as well as all the current stuff being broadcast.

its an amazing site, you should check it out if you're missing uk tv.

to sign up to uknova, just keep hitting the signup button, you will eventually get a signup page, but it may take a good few attempts, but the reward is well worth it. the registrations at thebox are about to close very soon, and it will then become a closed, invite-only site and getting access will be much harder - sign up now whilst you still can.

Why would anyone use torrents when there's usenet...?

because torrents are completely free. And you can sometimes find more obscure stuff on there.

Usenet is still great too though.

And takes forever - usenet is something like £8 a month, personally I found it a worthwhile investment to be able to get stuff within a reasonable timeframe.

a lot depends which torrent client you use. I've had circa 200kbps on certain torrents. Admittedly with Usenet its only limited by the speed on your connection. But how much can you really watch/listen to/play?

I have my pc on 24 hours a day and most things I want will come down the same day even with torrents.

I'd would say that sometimes quality is a bit more unpredictable with torrents, whereas with Usenet, the posters seem to really know what they're doing. But I've found really obscure live music using torrents, that I just can't find on usenet.

For larger stuff (3gb+) I do mostly head to Usenet though.

Yeah I have to agree that torrents are handy for small files or obscure music that usenet doesn't pick up, but for larger stuff it used to take me ages to get hold of anything. I recall one time that it took me almost a week to get 1 file (!)

that is just not true. some torrents may download slowly if there are few seeders, but on private sites where ratio matters, download speeds are usually high.

i can download a film in 10 mins on my cablecom line from several different private sites im a member of (torrentleech, torrentdamage, supertorrents, zamunda, filelist, bitsoup, thehorrorcharnel, cinemageddon, to name a few).

i dont use usenet because torrents have served my needs perfectly well and completely free of charge.

if you're torrenting experience is limited to public sites however, like torrentspy, isohunt, even demonoid (which is only semi-private) etc, then i can understand why you say torrents are slow. private sites on the other hand, are a whole different ball game.

for tv stuff, im a member of bitmetv and uknova, those sites have superfast download speeds. im also a member of tvtorrents which is usually fast too. thebox is a new site and speeds are a bit slower but as the site increases its membership and more high-speed uploaders join, the download speeds will become super-fast there too.

all my music needs are served by oink which also has superfast download speeds (when i say superfast, i mean maxing out my 10mb/1mb line - ie as fast as usenet).

and last but not least.. even when a particular torrent takes longer to download than on usenet, say 10 hours instead of 10mins, who cares? what does it matter? in just a few years torrenting i have already collected and archived to dvd-r several thousand films and tv shows i just havent had time to watch yet! speed isnt that important.

I just got my Cablecom TV connection, and am so soo disappointed with it. Is there anything other than News and Politics that is aired on Sundays on any of the English channels !!!

I was harsh about the spamming.

But many public torrents are rubbish, filled with people who have no idea how it should work.
That's why people are on Usenet or emule because it works.

I am well aware of the acerbic nature of British humor. So no issues and I actually like it.

Within the realm of television programs these sites are well organized. Of course there is a bunch of other junk so ignore it. Take a look at http://www.eztvefnet.org and let me know where there is rubbish. Ok ... Most of the programming in the US IS rubbish!

Usenet costs and as my 3.5 Mb connection peaks as it is the additional are really nice but not really required. Not familiar with e-mule so no comment there. Like to avoid registering for sites.

This really works for me and it probably should for others.
