can you please recommend free swiss online email account,
ie. similar to Gmail or such ?

it would have to be on a swiss server and swiss domain .ch

i would prefer if the user interface was in english (but it's not the end of the world if not).

preferably something similar to Gmail (a lot of free storage, user friendly,
easy to use and hopefully designed in AJAX)

i noticed a lot of folks using bluewin.ch as their email but the website has no option for english.

http://www.gmx.ch has a Swiss top level domain, is free, much space, AJAX beta, no English, and the mails are hosted in Germany as far as I know.

I'm not sure why you need the .ch domain - but if it's only to have an email address ending with .ch then you can pick any provider who offers POP3 access, regardless of their interface, and use gmail as the front end.

I just prefer to use .ch domain for dealing with swiss companies and authorities.

using POP via Gmail could work for receiving emails but anything sent out would still be delivered from my gmail.com address.

seriously, it's just that AJAX driven websites are so smooth, fast, practical,...
for instance entire page doesn't reload every time you click on something,
content just updates instantly without reload. less data is being transferred hence everything seems to run faster (especially when you have a slow connection), it basically runs like a desktop application.

Gmail lets you set up outgoing mails so that they appear with a different From address (e.g. your POP account). Check out "Settings - Accounts - Send mail as".

Of course, if your contacts looked at the email headers they'd still see that it originated from Google servers but who ever checks that?
