| | | Problems with iTunes 10.5
Anyone else have iTunes 10.5 with a US account suddenly find themselves a) unable to access the iTunes store and b) unable to update your iPhone?
I updated to 10.5 while I was in the US and as soon as I returned I couldn't access iTunes at all. I managed to get around this by enabling my US anon proxy for http/https and streaming ports which indicates that expats might need to step lightly if lacking a proxy and wanting to use the iTunes store. It could be that apple is finally putting the hammer down on foreign access to media, but I've not seen anything on the net indicating that this has happened.
I'd be interested to know if anyone else is seeing these problems? Perhaps my mistake was in updating in the US? I updated my iPad at the same time and it doesn't appear to be having problems updating apps or seeing the app store without proxies so, I'm wondering why only the laptop is seeing this issue.
Also, when attempting to update my phone, it either doesn't see the iPhone software server or claims the download has been corrupted.

My comments for the download corrupt part: Updates (for some people) here in Switzerland come through corrupt for some very weird reason. I tried downloading iOS5 a 'million times' and the checksum failed every single time. The files were correct bytesize but a variable part of the content differed. I didn't matter if I downloaded with direct link to Apples server or via iTunes. I won't bore you with more technical details but I can say that there was nothing wrong with my internet connection or the (multiple) computers I tried updating my iPad2 with.
Finally, days later, the only solution for updating was to download a copy of the iOS5 from another source, verify the checksum was what it is supposed to be, and then just installing the software.

I updated my iPhone 4 w/o problems but my 1st gen iPad just won't... Keep getting an error. My better halves iPad 2nd gen got updated w/o problem but her iPhone 4 won't!
The error I get is -1403 (I believe) which doesn't help very much |

I successfully updated my iPhone 4 and iPad 2, but for some reason, my wife's iPhone 3 will not update at all, it is stuck on 4.2.something.
What are the restrictions on iOS 5? My wife's iPhone was given to her by a relative to replace a lost handset, and we're not sure which model it is without asking.

Cor, what a colossal PITA this has been to get my phone updated. I updated my iPad in the US but once here, I downloaded the image from the net via my cablecom network which, though it had the right size, didn't have a correct checksum. I downloaded it directly from apple, same thing. I had my husband download it from his corp network, same thing. Finally, we got an uncorrupt copy using a VPN tunneled through to another country which worked. I suspect this shouldn't be so hard and that possibly somewhere in the network in .ch there's a bad actor? Having a brick phone for a day or two is not optimal and I would think this isn't just a few of us having this problem.
Anyway, if anyone is desperate for the 811mb file that will unbrick their phone, PM me and I'll be happy to provide.

Does it say the file/download is corrupt or something else? I've never seen this kind of hassle for an update before so I don't think it's the devices, rather something further upstream in the network.
You should be able to know which model the phone is by looking in the system prefs or, barring access to that, look up the serial number by series. If it's a 3GS you're good, but I'm not sure about the earlier 3 series phones. I actually prefer the 3gs phone but, unfortunately, I wasn't able to jailbreak mine due to the firmware so I had to get a 4.

If you're still having trouble and have a usb stick or want to meet in some shady coffee shop, I can get you a copy of the right image that will work. | | This user would like to thank poptart for this useful post: | |

The whole problem seemed same as with my iPad2 iOS5 update. Also iPhoto update was corrupt but that solved itself in a couple of days and after another n downloads. The extra traffic that this corrupt server creates here must be huge. It's interesting that the 800MB corrupt download has different bytes wrong per download, in the ballpark of hundreds to tens of thousands per file.
Anyways, if you hear what the problem was, I would also like to know :-)

HIGHLY APPRECIATED!!!!
I'll give it another try again tonight and see what happens and if no joy I'll PM you...

I think the phone may well be a 3G actually.

I had the same corrupt software issue with my iPod and iPads. I used this link http://www.ultrasn0w.ca/2011/06/inst...-download.html
Just download the ios software to your computer. When you open iTunes, select the device you want to update and hold the option key while you click on update. This will bring up a browser to find and select the file you downloaded. Select it and it will start updating without iTunes needing to download anything.
Hope that helps.

I originally had download problems for the software too. After installing iTunes 10.5 I also seem to have problems downloading films... They often stop with error 8008. It seems to help, by not allowing multiple downloads.

All my i-devices are now up and running on iOS 5 :-)

It seems there are problems downloading iPhone updates if you are on Cablecom with the white Thompson router. There is a fix referred to in this link: http://www.macforum.ch/forum/ftopic8387.html
(in German I'm afraid)
which basically entails disabling legacy mode on the router while you do the download then re-enabling it again afterwards. Only just found this so I haven't actually tried it myself yet - one more little job for later today

Thanks for the link. I have been having issues with all my Apple updates that are bigger than 200mb through my CableCom connection. I've been taking my MBP to Starbucks and doing my updates there for the last couple months. I've also been too damn lazy to ask if anybody else has been having this issue. I wrote it off to CableCom having dodgy copies of the updates on their proxies.
I'll check out the link and maybe do a Aperture update (550mb) tonight and see if that works.
