Does anyone know if it is possible to make calls via skype on iphone 4S while using internet connection ( not wifi ) through the orange internet? Is the quality of the calls good? I plan to use the skype for most of my calls, is 1GB enough?

I made a skype to skype call over 3G on my 3GS a while OK on Orange... it was 'OK'.

However I am not sure that VoIP is allowed by the ToS.

Hi there, I wonder if this will be of use to you. It's a bit lengthy to explain, but stick with me I purchased a local Swiss online number with Skype (see the link below), it was around £35, then I bought a Swiss Orange pay-and-go sim card (CHF5). I buy 30 CHF every 4 weeks in credit from Orange and this entitles me to 3 free numbers to call. The number can be Swiss Orange mobiles, or Swiss landline numbers. I made one of these free numbers my online Swiss Skype number. Then I set up call forwarding on my Skype account and set my caller ID to my Swiss mobile number. If I want to make a call overseas I open up Skype on 3G, select the number I want to call overseas from my phone and add it to my Skype forwarding option. Then I close down Skype and call my free Swiss Skype online number in the normal way from my cell phone, it forwards through my Skype account directly to the person overseas. Because of Skype caller ID they receive the call as if it's coming through from my cell phone. The call quality is perfect. Hope that's helpful!

For the last 6 months Orange were blocking skype calls over 3G but I just retested now and it seems to be working.
But bear in mind that the Orange 3G data network is at-best rubbish. I would say that over 50% of the time in Zurich city centre it is not functional. Also the underlying data network to the base stations is nothing more than individual ADSL routers from Swisscom, so don't expect much.. Imagine having a few thousand users hanging on your home internet access!
If your phone happens to jump to the 2G network then you are limited to a single voice channel of data (13k max)..they have no EDGE or GPRS network on 2G.
So if you have any intentions of actually using the 3G for anything apart from email and occasional web browsing then stick with Swisscom.

check out viber if you are calling another iphone or android(works on both), and the call quality is pretty good.

very clever. but complete overkill.

check out Lowcaller. does all this, with no need to involve Skype or setting forwarding numbers. Just call from your cell as normal, and you pay Skype rates.

Works fine on my android via 3G on orange but as others have said 3G coverage ain't the best outside of urban areas.
