| | | Samsung Smart TV in Switzerland
Hi,
I was trying to understand if the services offered from the newest Samsung TV are useful here in Switzerland. I'm speaking about TVs like the 40D6530 32D6530 etc..
I know Hulu doesn't work here, but I was wondering if all the other apps they have do work or not.
Also note that no one is saying if it works with plain old Cablecom (no digital).
(also funny is that Samsung says it's 1200mm wide, while most others says just 930mm, for the 40'')

Anything that shows interesting content. I saw that it was possible to see SyFy, Hulu, Fox and other things, but I'm not sure if they are separate apps or just a single one that allow several providers.

Or use the external upc cablecom settop box connected by HDMI, if you want

hmmm looks like it determines what you can see from your IP address as such you appear to get things in German, or at least where I am. It has things like google talk/maps/twitter/picasa you tube etc.

I'm not sure it's the same thing. I'd like to know which apps you have anyway (somewhere I've read that if you set it as a Swiss TV, you don't get Youtube widget, like weather, news, etc.)
What I've seen on a shop is a "directory view", where you can see Hulu, SyFy, Fox, Netflix etc. Then if you enter in Hulu, for example, you'll see it empty with a message like "not available".
Can you see something similar?
Unfortunately Samsung's website is poorly designed.

Stuff like Hula and Netflix will be restricted based on your IP address. If you use a US VPN you should be able access the content from the US, but it would need to be a VPN running off your router. I have a regular Samsung TV but a newer Blu-Ray player and so I get the apps through those. Even in the UK the more interesting and useful ones were not available. I have a US and UK VPN here but haven't tried out any of the apps yet.

Can you please list the apps? I can't find a decent list of what's installed and available for CH customers.
Also the various SyFy/Hulu stuff it's not considered an App I think, since it's under "Video" if I remember correctly. I did a quick browse at Fust, so I'm not sure of what I'm saying.. I think Apps are somewhere else and does show like app on iphone/ipad/android ecc..

You Tube, Facebook, Acetrax Movies, BBC News, Audi TV, google maps, google calendar, USA Today, Accuweather to be honest it looks like there are 200-300 apps, not seen Hulu or Syfy, but I have something called SKIFTA on my tablet and PC which allows me to stream anything from them to the TV.
There is a VOD service but the movies look like they may be in German | | This user would like to thank Markarina for this useful post: | |

If you press "Video", you should get a window called "Playon". At least that's what I saw today at Fust.
Try to have a look there and let me know.
Thanks again!

This is the main, clicking on the "videos" icon gives the message no device connected, clicking on "your videos" launches a VOD app no obvious name but the titles are in german, clicking through "allshare" and selecting "videos" then allows me to select video's on my laptop and tablet.
I can't see a video button the remote control.
I'm guessing that in the shop they have it connected to a local server of some sort, you could always ask them

It's the icon called "Videos" between Guide and Photos. I tried to find info on internet and the only thing I've found is that it could be a software that the guy of Fust installed on a server to share Videos to all their tv through ethernet cables. |

Given, as I stated in my post, selecting "video's" that is located between guide and photo's says no device connected I think you have your answer.

It looks like they are not working by ip but by the service menu's that are hidden. Search google samsung smart tv service menu.
From what i have found you can set the tv up in either hotel or hospital modes, this allows the hotel to offer internet tv from other countries and lock down what it will and will not allow. !!!! Take care you can mess up your tv if you get this wrong !!!! I already found some samsung pdf manuals but still going through them before i have a mess about with my new tv.
So it does look like we should be able to set the tv to think its in the us or uk....
Ill come back sometime with more info
Oh one more thing. Dont buy the flip remote with keyboard on the back, if you own an ipad you can download a free samsung app that gives you a full wifi remote plus when it comes to typing info such as user id and password the full size ipad keyboard should pop up. Once installed the app will auto discover your smart tv, the tv will ask if you agree to pair the ipad and your good to go!
Got to: app store then search for samsung remote.
There are also some apple apps for the iphone but im not sure if the do a full remote app such as the one for the ipad.
Have fun
Christopher

I've seen those forum about the "hack" you can do with the smart tvs. (samygo.tv). I'm interested in the possibility to unscramble the recordings, since I'd like to be able to record on my tv and watch them later on my laptop while on the train. I haven't tried yet though.
About the remote, I've tried it on an iphone AND I have the official RMC300D1P2, which react way faster than the iphone app. With the Serie 8000 and 7000 it works as a second tv screen as well! I have no use for it, so I'm trying to sell it (check on sale-wanted..60chf).
One more question, actually 2.
1. Smart Hub sometimes is very very slow. Is it just on my TV?
2. When the TV is switched off (standby actually) is it only mine that sometimes makes a loud click?

Hi there,
First its not the fastest cpu that runs the tv or the best for the interface between the network and tuner so even if you have a mega fast network connection its not going to get much faster, i would guess that its also buffering as much as possible before hand, you can do tests by connecting to your local lan i.e your media player and again on what you get from the net, the lan is a little faster but not a great deal.
The click is the internal power saving power supply, the system will monitor the receiver from the remote in a very low power mode waiting for a power on or off signal, this will then switch the relay (click you hear) so the tv has full power to run.
For the price of the samsung's i think its the best deal you can get for what you get. And as were in a time where people will upgrade tv's more regular than in years gone by i dont think its worth it to spend more on a set.
My last crt i kept for about 8 years, my last plasma for 4 and now my led?? Maybe soon we will change them like mobile phones???

Hi, thanks for the info.
I wasn't complaining. I'm perfectly happy with my 6510.
Unfortunately I think you misunderstood both my questions, which means I wrote it wrongly
The slowness is at the interface level. Sometimes when I start the smart hub I have to wait seconds before the "cursor" goes from a button (say "recorded app") to another one ( say "youtube"). I'm not doing anything at all..I suppose is the tv updating the Ad on the left and the top space with "my videos" thing. This is a bit annoying. I would have preferred to wait a bit more on startup or at least a "loading" cursor that informs me. (yes, I am picky, that's my profession). Still, I'm very happy with my tv.
Second point. The click happens when the TV is off and I am not trying to switch it on. It is exactly the same noise the relay does when switching on, but the TV doesn't actually switch on. I don't mind it, but I was just curious.
Since you seems to be knowledgable, have you tried samygo?

Also acts as a go between with netflix, hulu, etc and you would have the usual location restrictions. It's actually somewhat pricey.
If you want to serve up media to your TV and it supports DLNA give http://serviio.org a look for their free server. Handles pretty much everything other than Blu-Ray rips.

Your right about the delay (now i know whatyou mean) it is a little slow on that point but i dont think there is anything that can be done to improve it.
Clicking...
When its off and its clicking is there any flicker of any sign of anŷthing on the screen? I did notice one thing on ours along these lines but this was before i had the house re wired (old farm house and wireing a million years old). Anyway one of the three phases kept blowing a fuse and for some reason it had an effect on the line voltage to the living room, when the tv was off (on stadby) it would keep clicking but at the same time the screen for a fraction of a second flash. Not good thats why i had the place re wired.
