| | | Samsung Galaxy Note
Apparently digitec will have them in stock tomorrow: http://www.digitec.ch/ProdukteDetail...Artikel=225083
Anyone tempted by this? Too big to be a phone, too small for a tablet?
I'm thinking of getting it as a smaller/lighter replacement for the galaxy tab.

i might be tempted to try and use it as a phone, but i think it is probably too big for that.

Is good browsing possible without much zooming in? Any othe rpluses or minues (barring size?

it's pretty good. as i say, i've been using it only as a tablet, but it's a very good device.
the stylus is a bit useless since you can't rest your hand on the screen while writing which, imo, makes it useless for 99% of tasks. i did manage to sketch a very rough drawing on it and send it to an architect, but expect to be able to do better with a piece of A6 paper and crayons.
browsing is fine - although i use opera mini - so have noticed no issues with browsing.
the main issue is the size of the thing. perhaps the galaxy nexus would be a better 'phone' device than this due to the size.
minor quibbles:
- don't like the placement of the power and vol keys (i prefer power on the top and vol keys sunk in to avoid accidental presses
- also don't like the softkeys at the bottom which need to be backlit to be seen instead of having the icon printed on there (another form over function trade-off)
- back is a very smooth plastic which makes it slip easily out of the hand. particularly due to the size, it's not possible to 'cradle' the device in one hand.
- not the latest android OS
i'd be quite tempted to use it as a phone too and so have one device for everything, but the lack of keyboard and it's giant size puts me off. tempted to go with a chacha/droid pro as a main device for email (due to portrait keyboard) or might even go back to the E71.

Hi Phil_MCR, did you bought it without subscription plan? is it possible for a foreign student with only student visa to buy it without plan?

As I am STILL using the antiquated Nokia N97, I may not be qualified to put in my 2 cents ;-) but wondering whether any of you Samsung Galaxy Note users have played with a Lumia 800 or 900?
I was at MWC this week and really liked the form factor/build quality (of both) and the interface was pretty cool in the 10 minutes that I was using it. I also stopped by the Samsung booth and felt like the Note was a bit too big to hold up to my ear and certainly too big to fit in a shirt pocket.
In any case, not trying to criticize the Note, just wondering what people are saying about the Lumia phones.

PS - I am a Mac user, with all the gadgets except the iPhone. Was planning on getting the 4S, just for the interoperability with my other stuff, but it seems too small now!

True though, the Note is quite big, pretty much like the Dell Streak was on it's (un)glory days.
But anyway, Samsung phones/tablets are a year ahead over Apple's (Galaxy S2 vs iPhone 4S anyone?), so stick with the upcoming Quad Core models from Samsung.. I am drooling over the new Galaxy S3
Nokia phones are.. well.. pretty damn low level now. Used to believe they were THE big thing.. but I lost faith with the N97 which HAD to sell a couple of month after I got it.. Don't know if this applies to the Windows versions as well, but I believe yes. And the 41MP Cam on their new phones is a joke for that kind of resolution, though I could be wrong?

I have been a Nokia user mainly because of the great hardware and phone/radio. That is why I bought the N97 years ago... and yes, it was a disappointment.
Samsung has been doing great things in consumer electronics, and I think the Galaxy phones have been pushing the envelope with technology.
As a Mac user (2 MB Pros, Mac Pro, AppleTV 1and2, Time Capsule), I have not gotten the iPhone 4S, as it didn't seem to stack up to some of the other stuff out there.
With the Lumia 800 and 900, I think we have another strong competitor. I was really impressed and looking here to see what some of the resident gadgetheads were thinking.
But I don't believe Android or Nokia/MS plays well in the Mac world... so I am stuck!!
But always happy to see cool, new gadgets.

Microsoft has a nice software solution for Macs (Microsoft Phone 7 Connector, available for free in the Mac App Store) - allows you to update your WP7 phone and sync it with iTunes.
Samsung has KIES for Mac, which also allows you to update and sync your Samsung Android phone (includes all Samsung Android phones except for the Galaxy Nexus, as that one has stock Android on it and is serviced directly by Google).

i like the samsung devices as they use plastic and so device is light (compared to metal/glass contruction of iphones). also the android modifications are good - someone at samsung is paying attention to usability.
i'm not really sure what windowsphone has to offer over android...
interestingly, i got a new nokia candybar feature phone with symbian OS and really enjoying the simplicity of it and the long battery life and great reception. two of nokia's strengths.

This phone gets a +1 from me. I do refer to it as the tv rather than the phone but its amazing for commuting with. Any other phone seems tiny now |

Mixed review on the MS Phone 7 connector and have only heard bad reviews about all things KIES. Anyway, that is why I ask here for any real-world experience.

Hello,
I bought it in january. I must say, very good phone, but, as always, with pro and cons.
Pro:
- Big screen
- Phone is very fast
- Android (soon ported to android 4.0 or "ICS")
Cons:
- The screen isn't "Gorilla Glass", so be careful with it (mine is scratched already)
- Hard to find a case for this size
And the best: very good (maybe the best on a smartphone) camera!

I am tempted too with the NOTE but settled for a bigger screen (gorilla glass). I use it as my secondary phone too.
... and i'm enjoying watching movies via netflix too | |
