| | | Help with Cablecom Internet connection
Folks,
I tried looking for this on Cablecom website but the details are in German only. I've got my package with all the hardware & software for Cablecom internet connection today. But the installation instructions are either very basic/high level or are only in German. Also, on their website the users guide is in German. http://www.cablecom.ch/en/index/inte...acilissimo.htm https://service.cablecom.ch/scp/cons...lation&lang=en
Anyone out there who's "been there - done than" who can help?
Please help.
Thanks

Did you get the wireless router with it? All I had to do was to log into the router, and a web application walked me through the entire installation. The cablecom service was available as a service provider, it also walks you through setting up a firewall and encrypting your signal, fantastic.
Edit.
To log into the router, just plug the ethernet cable in from your PC, and enter 192.168.0.1 (might also be 192.168.1.1) in your web browser address bar. Look up the router model on the internet for more info.

Having done it a few times myself, maybe I can help, but to head for the right documentation I need to know what you have.
What hardware did you get? Just a modem or a modem and router?
What is your PC running?

I got Cablecom internet a few months ago- at the time their install CD did not work with Vista.
Luckily I had an old PC with Windows 2000 on it which allowed me to get everything up and running. But if you're installing all the bits and pieces with a Vista PC- it certainly didn't work 3 months ago, I don't know if this has changed since then.

Thanks Cyrus & JVC. I've got a modem with following slots at the back:
- Power
- Line 1 & Line 2
- ENET
- USB
- CABLE
...and a bunch of cables with it.
I was hoping for a wireless internet conenction but it seems like there will be a bunch of cables dangling with my laptop.

Cablecom Installer
Version 4.1
Windows: XP, 2000, ME, 98 SE
Doesn't mention Vista. I currently have Xp installed but I'll upgrade to Vista next week. How does that work then? What did you do in your case?
Thanks

I got set up with Cablecom a couple of months ago. Managed without the instructions. If you need some help, I'd be happy to take a look at it for you.
I am in Zurich also.

Hi Tiger,
I didn't use the installer CD... you shouldn't need it.
I use XP myself. If you are going to "upgrade" to Vista, I'd recommend getting things working first on XP. The "upgrade" should keep things working.
Are you sure you want to get Vista? Why?
Anyway, PM me if you need more help. Would be happy to pop round and help sort this out for you.
I can also tell you what to do to go Wireless if that is what you want.
Cheers

Incidentally I was amused to see that in the UK Ofcom is about to get tough with Broadband suppliers who don't provide the advertised speeds to their customers see here for example.
I was delighted when I signed up here with Cablecom to find that the Broadband Speed Test rated my connection at EXACTLY the advertised speed (3.5Mbs download 350kbs upload). THAT is Swiss efficiency for you!

Well, mabe I used the wrong word here - "upgrade" (Vista). To go back in history (about 2 months back). I got this new HP Pavilion laptop from London with Vista loaded in it (Home Premium). Since I wanted to look like a hero/show off, I tried upgrading it to Vista Ultimate! In the process, I messed up some of the settings.
Now I've loaded XP using XP CD from my office and have ordered recovery discs from HP for my laptop. They should be in by next weekend. So once I run those, I'll be back to Vista.
But I guess you're right. I'll start working on using the internet connection with XP and then "upgrade" to Vista next week. Hopefully, it should keep working.
As for going wireless, what do I need to do/spend?
Thanks again for your help.

Cablecom instructions and all communications can be done in english (including their website). From the sounds of the modem, you have an adsl + digital phone.
I have the same, and everything was given to me in english (including installation cd) and took 10 min to install. Give them a call and ask to change your language preference on their system to english.

I had no issues with installing Cablecom internet and I'm using Vista Ultimate...hooked it up just last week (through a Linksys WRT54G router w. wireless) and the Cablecom CD did the job. I have the VCM03 modem (w/ IP Phone). To go wireless, you'll want a wireless router connected between the cable modem and your pc. I can confirm that the Linksys works fine in this set up and is a great router.
Aside, I'm impressed with the service...download speeds as fast as 12Mbps (on the 10Mbps plan) according to http://www.speedtest.ch/ |

The sample time it uses is probably too short, as I regularly get 440-450 Kbps on large downloads.
... Just downloaded 250 MB, and it came down at a steady ~450 Kbps.

There is possibly something wrong with your signal - low signal will create lots of errors and will reduce the speed.
Check with your neighbours to see what speed they get (make sure they are cablecom customers) and compare speeds. If hugely different, suspect something in your apartment, PC, or your modem.
If theres is the same, keep doing speed checks every couple of days, and if your results are consistant over a couple of weeks, send an email to the helpdesk, quoting your customer number and address, stating you have a speed problem.

This ought to be straightforward but seemingly not.
I got my cable modem + wireless router (Siemens SE551) more than a month back .
I tried setting up a wifi network then but since it was taking way too long, I decided to just browse using a wired connection to the cable modem which I have been doing since.
Today, I finally decided to setup a wifi network (obviously, it had nothing to do with me getting a iphone ). I followed the instructions on the cablecom installer cd but it seems it cannot find the router.
Any pointers?

Have you disabled the firewall ?
Under the router is an adress(labled) like this http://192.168.2.1
Type that in the internet explorer
Can you reach your router now ?
When you can, you can configure your router now.
Most important is the useraccount and the password aswell the mac adress of the wlan card
(labled on it)
