language switch in TVs

I have heard that some newer TVs have a Audio Language selector - allowing for input Audio (in german) to be converted to English.

Is it possible for a german channel from UPC cablecom to be automatically translated to english (e.g. Disney or NickJr)?

thanks,

That would be a nice feature!! Never heard of it though.

I guess what you have in mind is dual-language channels - the Swiss channels as well as ORF (not sure which ones I forgot) sometimes show programmes in the original language as well as dubbed.

If you press the Audio button on your remote (may also look like this ) you should be able to change the audio channel.

Check the programme for the shows that have this feature, as it is not done for all the shows from overseas.

Edit: not even sure if you're in Switzerland, so your mileage may vary.

Re: language switch in TVs

They're not automatically translated, rather some channels are broadcast with 2 audio channels, usualy the local language and the original language.

Even if one channel does it, SF2 for example, it's not for all programming. You can check in the listings, usualy they have the languages listed, or there's a symbol, 2 joined circles, next to programs with the option.

You can switch between them with the stereo/mono button the remote.

Yes, that is a standard function with digital television.

Many many TV stations broadcast in multiple languages.
Example: EuroSport broadcasts in about 6 languages, all at the same time.

You select the language you want on your TV receiver.

HOW you select the language depends on what TV receiver you have:

Example:
Samsung TV: TOOLS - Audio Language - change language with select the language,.
Cablecom HD Mediabox Receiver: press the i button on the remote, select Soundtrack, change soundtrack with < & > keys.

The languages being broadcast is decided by the TV station
the languages can vary from program to program
Sometimes they signal 4 languages but put the same audio track on each language. Right now SRG is broadcasting the Lauberhorn Rennen, signalling 4 languages (DE, FR, IT, EN) but putting the german audio on each language channel.

In case you didn't understand the other postings, this is NOT translation, rather multiple audio channels - like you can select the language on a DVD.

Re: language switch in TVs

The button on the remote is sometimes like this: II

It's important to check this feature before buying a TV, as different manufacturers handle this feature in different ways:

1) easily with a permanent default to the second language (usually English)

2) with a lot of faffing each time, defaulting to the first language each time (German or French)...

As a linguist, I'd say this would be pretty fraking awesome :-) However, machine translation still is nowhere near that level of sophistication. What you mean is dual-channel audio, as described by others in this thread.

All the swiss channels, i.e., SF, TSR and RSI transmit most shows in original language as well as dubbed. As of end of Feb, they will also do so in High Definition.

EuroNews comes in 9 (nine!) languages! Including Russian, Spanish, and and and...

The quantity of languages available varies a lot by TV station...

I seem to only have analogue Swiss stations and digital German/Austrian Satellite stations at this serviced apartment. I know some Swiss stations in digital have the option to watch some films in the original language so I can select English when available. Unfortunately as these stations are in analogue I believe I can't do this. This leaves many German and Austrian stations available on the Satellite box. Does any of these stations have the options to watch in English?

Thank you in advance
http://www.tvprogramm.sf.tv/q/aa/3/start/0

and then switch with or maybe I/II on your remote.

Does anybody know where I can find a list of TV stations broadcast in multiple languages, particularly German and Austrian stations? I have digital for these stations but analogue for Swiss stations so they are no good for listening to in English.

It's programme by programme, not channel-by-channel.

Go to tvinfo.de, find your programme and click on it. On the left of the screen you'll see the date in a red box and under it, there's a set of logos which give you technical info. If there is an icon that looks like oo (when you hover over it, it will say Zweikanalton), then the oo or I/II button on your remote control should give you the original language.

The site tvtv.de formats the results much better, I've just found.
