Upgraded my upc cablecom connection with excellent results

So I upgraded my upc cablecom Internet from 50Mbps to 100Mbps, and got the new Thomson WiFi Cable Modem router as well.

Ordered on Friday, was delivered on Saturday (but I wasn't home), so I picked it up on Monday night.

Speed test results on my PC, connected to one of the router LAN GigE ports:

That's at 8:17pm on a weekday night!
And I like that I am faster than 96% of Switzerland

The Thomson router is fine. You can change a lot of settings and set your own SSID and password (I strongly recommended this for better security). And it has domain filter and MAC filter capabilities.

The SpeedTest on my iPhone shows it does about 30 Mbps max on the iPhone WiFi 802.11n connection

WiFi coverage is good, I can now get >20 Mbps on my iPhone in every room in my apartment, better than my previous Netgear WiFi router.

So benefits:
1. Less boxes
2. Less power consumption
3. Better speeds (WiFi and Internet)
4. Nicer looking as well

I'm pretty happy with it!

Good to know! I am deciding on a new Internet provider, and Cablecom is definitely an option, considering their competitive prices and their speed. Do you only have Internet from Cablecom or also other services?

And I assume you are happy with them all? Sorry to hijack your thread, but that is pretty impressive speed that you are getting, which is why I'm leaning more towards Cablecom

Yep, upc cablecom has been rock solid for me for 4 years

And now I have all digital TV with HDMI connections, the TV is pretty stunning

So I'm very happy

Re: Upgraded my upc cablecom connection with excellent results

It is a good router, but lacks decent firewall features such as SPI and incoming IP filters/blocks. Port forwarding limited to 10 ports... Sadly, my 3rd Thomson from CC and no fix in sight for the lockups every few days under heavy load. I run quite a few services /servers on my LAN and will have to hang two old Netgear routers off it , segmenting port forwarding in two ranges - half to each router and then port forward from each router until I bite the bullet and invest in a decent Firewall with WiFi.

The range is good though , firmware updates and documentation are poor though. I seem to suffer more from DNS outages in the early morning and my pingdom uptimes have worsened slightly

My Speedtest over LAN is slightly lower than my Netgear WNDR 3700, and I prefer the Netgear in some respects, but the combination Thomson just gets my vote.

Re: Upgraded my upc cablecom connection with excellent results

I'm with UPC also and I have to say, their service has been faultless since I got them in early december. I have their 50Mbps internet with TV and phone and here's a speedtest @ 21:10:

So far I couldn't recommend them enough (although their TV system is nowhere near as good as my Sky+ HD!).

Sky+ HD is not officially nor commercially available in Switzerland

Anyone installing it in Switzerland is breaking the terms and conditions of their service contract....

Re: Upgraded my upc cablecom connection with excellent results

I upgraded a couple of weeks ago from 25 to 50. The test results are consistent and impressive, but I don't actually notice any difference...

Re: Upgraded my upc cablecom connection with excellent results

I have the 100MPS cablecom connection as well and it is super fast. I consistently get 85 to 90+ MPS. Never had any issues except when lines were broken due to high winds. Strangely enough I started my service in July and paid monthly bills until October. Then no bill for 3 months. This month I got my bill and it was for 87 CHFS....go figure.

Just a word of caution on chosing Cablecom as your EMAIL account provider - when it comes time to MOVE you will have to continue with Cablecom (40 sfr / month) in order to keep your mail account - sounds crazy but this is what we were told. Anybody heard differently ?

Re: Upgraded my upc cablecom connection with excellent results

I suspect nearly all ISPs are the same. The email address is theirs, if you don't pay for their services you can't log in to your account and get your emails any more.

Either get your own domain and email account or (for free) get a web-based one such as gmail or hotmail etc.

Who told you? Cablecom? Thought not.

It's the same with all ISPs. They will delete your email account, though the enforcement is not strictly applied and usually an email account will still work after a year. But don't bank on it...

If your bill is under 50 CHF then they won't bill you monthly. They'll wait until your bill is over 50 CHF then send it to you. I guess it cuts down on administrative work or whatever.

Re: Upgraded my upc cablecom connection with excellent results

My biggest complaint with Cablecom in comparison to Swisscom is the selection of English channels, particularly in French speaking Switzerland

They don't even have ITV HD or BBC one HD!
