Buying a Kindle in Switzerland

This may seem a really stupid question, but how do I go about buying a Kindle in Switzerland? I keep getting directed to the U.S store which seems a bit overkill. Once I have, where do I buy my books from?

Thanks in advance...

Get a friend in FR or DE to get it for you.

I bought mine from the US store - it took about 2-3 days to arrive here. I buy my books from the US store, but I think you can transfer to another store (.de, .co.uk) - there was a recent thread about it here.

Do you have to pay any import charges or are they inclusive?

(2-3 days - wow)

Amazon loops in some charges to cover import fees - for mine (i got the cheapest one - no keyboard, no touch), it was 140 USD total - 109 for the kindle, 21 for shipping, and 10 for import fees. Maybe cheaper if you order it from .co.uk or .de, but I didn't try it.

And I know - superfast! It goes out overnight to the UPS facility just over the border in Germany.

Great, will check out the .de store...maybe .fr will ship it cheaper.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Buying a Kindle in Switzerland

Why not ordering it here in Switzerland? I got mine from Digitec.ch for 240chf. I have had no hassle at all purchasing books from my UK amazon account.

Re: Buying a Kindle in Switzerland

Just played with things - it looks like you can't from .fr, .co.uk or .de without an in country address - so either you pay too much from a Swiss place (169 CHF for the one i got on digitec) or you order from the US.

(but I love it, you should totally get one!)

Re: Buying a Kindle in Switzerland

My Kindle is from digitec, bf just sucked it up and paid the 40 francs extra as a surprise, then I got my bf's in the US. We're both linked to amazon.de accounts and have had no issues.

Digitec is a new shop for me. It's great. 169chf doesn't seem to bad...I suppose.

Re: Buying a Kindle in Switzerland

Kindle Touch is $99 and the regular Kindle is $109 dollars on the U.S. store...but they won't deliver the Kindle Touch. That sucks.

Re: Buying a Kindle in Switzerland

got mine from Amazon US also, ordered Friday came Monday via UPS, no import duties to pay. Get books from Amazon US on "one clic". Amazon US easier to negotiate round that Amazon DE. Managing to get all books I would normally buy from Amazon UK. Got the basic kindle as just wanted an e-reader and love it!

Re: Buying a Kindle in Switzerland

Three days ago I started to consider the Kindle.
Two days a go on one of my favourite sites a exhaustive review is posted.
Yesterday a colleague of mine gets one (and can't shut up about it).
Now this.
(glancing upwards) fine, I can take a hint. I'll head to digitec and pick mine tomorrow.
Can someone elaborate on the Keyboard vs Touch, and relative usefulness of the 3G module? Also, did you guys find those Kindle cases here in Switzerland? (those Amazon made).

I got the very basic one - no keyboard, no touch - just some buttons to play around with. More awkward to type, but I don't do too much of that. I played with my brother's Kindle Touch over Christmas and thought the page turn function was less intuitive. If you can find a friend's one to play with, do that - I decided to get one after my husband got one and i played with it for a while.

or buy one from US via mailorder - should be cheaper even if you have to pay import fees.

Books you buy at amazon, you can register your device with any adress you like and will be directed to the right webshop depending on your home country.

I assume import fees are totally random ? ie if you are unlucky enough to have your parcel stopped ?

Amazon collects import fees in advance as a deposit - I think they have it down to a science for the kindle.

I need it just as an e-reader - I don't want to anything else really. Thanks for the info, think I may just go for the simple model.

Gal
One of Digitec's famous grey-imports without a proper Swiss warranty (devices go back to wherever Digitec imported them from if they need servicing - that takes several weeks up to months).

Their customer service is one of the worst I've encountered so far in Switzerland - after having shed around 20k on their web shop in the last 5 years or so, I've decided to never buy from them again. 7 weeks waiting-time for a DoA computer, empty promises (no problem, just bring it in, we'll exchange it - then: unfortunately, we don't have any here, we'll mail you a new one ASAP - then: unfortunately, Dell won't take it back, will have to get if fixed, takes another 4 weeks). So, if you need a working device fast, buy from Amazon.com. If you're willing to put up with lousy service and shoddy imports, go with Digitec.

Re: Buying a Kindle in Switzerland

I have the previous Kindle Generation, just with WiFi, and i'm very happy with it. basically my reading habits became more regular, its easier to carry books when they are so slim For me, it was one of my best buys.

About the Touch, Amazon is starting to deploy an update for the new Kindles, that will fix some performance issues, that made the page transition and menus feel a bit "sluggy"

No I just have to jailbrake my kindle so I can put my own pictures on the devices instead of the "dead writers" pictures heheh

Cheers
