Kindle or no kindle?

Must say I hated the idea as I just love books, book shops and libraries. However OH has recently got one and it is great when traveling, and I know he is buying me one in the UK for my BD later this month.

Somebody has asked me to translate a book from French into English about one of our famous local products. Sadly the author has not got the financial means to have the English version published. However somebody suggested we make it available on kindle for download against a fee. Haven't got a clue - can anybody here explain how this would work? Taah.

Here's the "get started" page with Amazon: https://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/help

good luck!

Re: Kindle or no kindle?

Please do keep your options open!

Whilst Kindle is good, do be careful to not "lock" yourself in on their proprietary format (.mobi).
Kindle books can not be read directly on an iPad (it requires the Kindle App, yes I know the App is free)

Personally I would create not only a Kindle version, but also a .PDF as Kindle, iPad and most epub readers support reading of .PDF documents.

Also, steer clear of the new iPad book creator app. If you create content with it you agree to be locked into iTunes for distribution as well as paying them 30% of your takings (prior to seeing it) and them owning the layout of your publication.

Anyway, point being, Kindle is good, but please also look into .mobi and .PDF

Have a look at LULU for publishing on demand... I've bought several books there and the quality has been as good as any I've bought of the shelf.

Lulu is ok, I have 2 books published there, but I think there are cheaper or at least better ways.
