Just experimenting for educational purposes. I am running XP Profess., Norton antivirus and netopia wireless router for Blue win. How can I check that port 11033 is open.

Any ideas welcome -Tel Andy
My god that's afew things to check.

Take them one by one in order from the closest to the wall if that makes sense!

Router, Anti-Virus (erm this a firewall aswell?) and the XP firewall (not that this should be an issue)

Then again every pc is different so post up specific questions without giving away your IP please!

Start a DOS Shell. Then type these commands.
netstat -na > netstat.txt
notepad netstat.txt

Then search for the string 11033

Or

telnet www.some.where 11033

(Disclaimer: I expect there may be a way to filter the netstat -na output to avoid the .txt file, but my DOS is rusty and I don't do Windoze at home).

Do you mean to say M$ were pressured into DRM? Or just some particular iPlayer brain damaged requirement?
M$ were pressured into uptake of DRM constraints on Vista, hence no one in their right mind chooses to buy it (except me who is dumb!)

Iplayer is the BBC protecting it's content aparantly.

Trouble is you are paying companies and encouraging them to add this resource hungry junk, someone estimated 10% cpu load with DRM in vista to play high def content that's without anythings else going on just the DRM junk.

Plenty around on the web to research this stuff!

I'd never really thought of M$ as being "pressured" into putting DRM in. I have long been of the opinion they were only too happy to stiff customers if it meant the entertainment industry would adopt their audio and video standards.

But it might explain the apparent willingness of M$ to severly brain damage Vista with that cr*p. Maybe Hanlon's Razor applies: "Never attribute to malice, that which can adequately be explained by stupidity".

I think they quite fancied the idea of DRM though, as they've long wanted to get into the entertainment side of things.

Oh, in case it saves folks from wasting their time, Windows XP or Vista are required. iPlayer won't work with older versions of Windows, or non-Windows operating systems.

The file sharing and digital rights management (DRM) technology we use is only compatible with Windows XP and Vista. We are aware of demand to expand this to other operating systems, please check at a later date for any further news.

Re: BBC iplayer

I have tried but it will not open - not available in your area, I think they use some kind of filter to stop foreign access due to licensing. They are working on a BBC World Service iplayer which we would have access to but not sure of the content.

Re: BBC iplayer

If you follow the exact directions with a working proxy, as explained, then you will find that this works with Vista and XP. (but not the streaming, as the proxy will most likely be much too slow).

TO BE CARRIED OUT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

Okay guys here goes, "hypothetically" Cata1ysts guide to bypassing the bbc's iplayer locks...

First open the link above listing open proxy servers and note a couple of proxy servers down from the list.

(You need the port number aswell as the IP address)

Then open internet explorer, go to tools, internet options then connections, the click on lan settings.

A window opens complete it as shown below

Attachment 3075

Okay now time to be patient.. Open the bbc website and start download the iplayer.

N.b once the connection is downloading the iplayer application you can disable the proxy.

(Within the LOCAL NETWORK SETTINGS window from above, untick the use proxy server for your lan and click ok)

It should download quicker than the poor initial connection via the proxy as you switch back to your own connection!

Attachment 3073
Attachment 3074

Okay once that it downloaded install as normal.

Then browse the BBC website for what you want to view.

I suggest d/l and not viewing via proxy as I will explain in a moment.

Re-enable the PROXY connection (as before) before downloading the content and any time you have issues with "You are outside the UK."

You will also need to do this BEFORE playing the content (this is important as it needs the DRM key before playing and you will need to d/l the content again if this is not done!)

You can then disable it once the d/l has started or after the player has initialised after a couple of seconds.

Here's the proof I got it to work!

Attachment 3076
Attachment 3077

Basically it seems to work by tricking the bbc site into thinking you are in the UK allowing you to start the d/l, then you remove the proxy to use the full bandwidth of you own net connection.

Do not attempt to STREAM content by clicking play it will not work or be extremely slow

Okay addicts you can now get your telly fix.

Part 2 time to crack the d/l content so you can put it on to disk.

Mods I am really not sure I can post this, but in case perhaps it might be worth leaving around for a few hours?

I suggest those that are feeling guilty about not contributing to the 3.2bn pounds the BBC get from license payers should by a UK tv license or give some money to children in need!

Thanks.

Will be interesting if the FreeSat Box will work on iPlayer located here.

Heard a friend can use the Sky download service here without any issues.

Re: BBC iplayer

Or you can actually use something like vpntunnel.co.uk. This gives you a full and valid UK IP address (no dodgy proxy servers needed)

It works pretty good, you get a bandwidth limit (or 50 gig so - loads of tv streaming) and this for £10 / month

I use it mainly for streaming while working on my computer. It works for iPlayer, ITV Player, C4 Catchup and basically everything that works in the UK.
(including Radio streaming like Radio 5 live)

Even Zattoo detects you to be in the UK now, which gives you the uk selection.

The set-up is easy - their website lead you through each step needed.

Now that is interesting. I'm using Freesat at the moment, but had assumed the iPlayer functionality simply wouldn't work here when it comes out. The BBC have always seemed pretty quick at closing these kind of holes in the past, but fingers crossed this time...
