BBC iplayer

Has anyone downloaded a programme in the UK and played it in CH. Ie Once you have downloaded a programme onto your PC, does it check your IP address before playing.

Secondly are they going to bring out a subscription service to all non UK residents?

Re: BBC iplayer

It does check. Having gone to all the trouble of registering downloading it and installing it, it told me that the service was only for UK users. I haven't found a proxy that's capable of handling it either.

Re: BBC iplayer

Shame. I am looking for a proxy too. I have asked the BBC for a scheme whereby foreigners can pay but no luck so far either

Re: BBC iplayer

You need a UK based proxy server or a friend with a f/t up connection that's willing to act as a UK proxy server.

Which hides your swiss IP address and seems to the BBC to be a UK one (hijacks the host servers IP address)

Couple of discussions going on here about the subject

http://www.toytowngermany.com/lofi/i...hp/t73412.html

http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=52767

Using a proxy can be a security risk bare this in mind please. I might tinker this evening see what I can do.

These open proxies tend to be slow aswell!

Re: BBC iplayer

They say they are working on it for 'International' customers.

Guess an issue is with the Broadcasting licence. Same as why SKY only allow you to use their system in the UK

Digital Rights Management (Scum Software Code)

Stops you switching the format, (say from iplayer to your ipod etc) self deletes iplayer content from your hard disk after 30 days etc etc. Anti-Copy protection garbage.

Basically code that makes itself a annoyance. Another M$ favourite (DRM), Vista is riddled with it.

Edit I should add a disclaimer here it's CPU hungry and Microsoft were pressured into it by the film/music industry

It's the first thing I break, If I own a legit DVD/CD I want to be able to do what i want with it. After all I've paid for it

Google/Wikipedia are you friends

Re: BBC iplayer

Quick list of some UK based open proxies

http://www.xroxy.com/proxy-country-GB.htm

82.29.254.40 Seems the most stable, then again it looks like a old NTL proxy, which should give you pretty good bandwidth

Re: BBC iplayer

TO BE CARRIED OUT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

Okay guys here goes, "hypothetically" Cata1ysts guide to bypassing the bbc's iplayer locks...

First open the link above listing open proxy servers and note a couple of proxy servers down from the list.

(You need the port number aswell as the IP address)

Then open internet explorer, go to tools, internet options then connections, the click on lan settings.

A window opens complete it as shown below

bbc-iplayer-lan-settings.jpg

Okay now time to be patient.. Open the bbc website and start download the iplayer.

N.b once the connection is downloading the iplayer application you can disable the proxy.

(Within the LOCAL NETWORK SETTINGS window from above, untick the use proxy server for your lan and click ok)

It should download quicker than the poor initial connection via the proxy as you switch back to your own connection!

bbc-iplayer-iplayer-2.jpg
bbc-iplayer-iplayer-3.jpg

Okay once that it downloaded install as normal.

Then browse the BBC website for what you want to view.

I suggest d/l and not viewing via proxy as I will explain in a moment.

Re-enable the PROXY connection (as before) before downloading the content and any time you have issues with "You are outside the UK."

You will also need to do this BEFORE playing the content (this is important as it needs the DRM key before playing and you will need to d/l the content again if this is not done!)

You can then disable it once the d/l has started or after the player has initialised after a couple of seconds.

Here's the proof I got it to work!

bbc-iplayer-iplayer-proof.jpg
bbc-iplayer-iplayer-action.jpg

Basically it seems to work by tricking the bbc site into thinking you are in the UK allowing you to start the d/l, then you remove the proxy to use the full bandwidth of you own net connection.

Do not attempt to STREAM content by clicking play it will not work or be extremely slow

Okay addicts you can now get your telly fix.

Part 2 time to crack the d/l content so you can put it on to disk.

Mods I am really not sure I can post this, but in case perhaps it might be worth leaving around for a few hours?

I suggest those that are feeling guilty about not contributing to the 3.2bn pounds the BBC get from license payers should by a UK tv license or give some money to children in need!

Re: BBC iplayer

Warning terms and conditions state..(I must add I own a UK tv license + I could have watched this via cablecom. The DRM infested junk + files are now being removed from my PC!!!)

You agree:
  • not to download or attempt to download the BBC Content if you are outside the UK;

Re: BBC iplayer

Cool, worth having a go just to see it work.

Would be good if something simular could be done for 'SKY Anytime'. Guess this could be done if a computer was used as the firewall, or maybe the router could be changed, but would be a pain to keep switching it back and forth, or can you have 2 routers on a single line? Hmmm

Do read this forum thread:

Use of TOR and Orbit downloader still works with BBC iPlayer I think.

Cheers

Do you mean to say M$ were pressured into DRM? Or just some particular iPlayer brain damaged requirement?
