Re: good TV series recomendations..... ?

We just enjoyed the original House of Cards, a BBC series from 1990 . Didn't even know that it existed. Great acting and very much in the classic BBC style. It's on (french) Netflix.

Starts on Sky UK on 25th April.

Bones is back on the 20th April after it's long US break (only a few weeks in the UK) and also Supernatural for its 11th season. Didn't realise that had been going for so long!

Oops got things mixed up! Bones starts on the 18th April - it's CSI: Beyond Borders that starts on the 20th along with Supernatural.

I really liked series 1 & 2 of Penny Dreadful.

Started The Bridge series 1 on Netflix. Watching it in reverse order as I have only ever watched series 3 on BBC 4 not so long ago. It's very good.

Longmire season 4 is now wrapped up - and poised nicely for season 5. The production values are noticeably better than the earlier seasons with some stunning filming.

Downloaded stuff is now in MKV format - which for apple users is not exactly friendly!

Just recently I came across Deutschland 83, which was really good. BBC or ITV, don't remember. However, so far only 6 episodes, but there is a rumour they will make a second season called Deutschland 86.
Apparently it is to be a trilogy, with a third season called Deutschland 89. Good series.

Is Constantine series on Netflix or Amazon prime, anyone know?
Cancelled after one season, I'm afraid.

It's quite trite, TBH, but I'll still watch it because I have a crush on Eva Greene.

Latest bunch of American shows:
Lucifer- started so well, with lines only an eloquent Brit could deliver. Series plot wobbled midway through as if they weren't sure of the final direction. 10 episodes in it is has been good but thin.
Carry on the Omen, more like - I'm half expecting him to exclaim "matron" at any moment...

Speaking of which Damien, for those who have seen it, has been a painful disappointment.

Anyone have watched 'Making a Murderer' from Netflix?
I've really really enjoyed this docu-thriller. But don't read anything about it (if you haven't done that already) just give it a try for 2 or 3 episodes.

Re: good TV series recomendations..... ?

Nice to have Game of Thrones back, except that we've completely lost the plot. It's like some awful comedy sketch with the old couple sat on the sofa both remembering different bits of that far-off series 5. Why did he have to include seven tribes? I think three would have been plenty, and much easier to follow . Why is Anya blind? Neither of us can remember... (PS Just joking, I can Google it, so no need to tell me)...

We just blasted through series one of "Happy Valley", which is, somewhat predictably, not very happy, but good stuff nevertheless. About a gritty Northern british woman police officer in a gritty Northern british town. A colleague told me that the second series is "dark". I can't say that the first was a laugh a minute. Downloading it now .

Re: good TV series recomendations..... ?

Two series I've watched but that I can't really recommend:

Vinyl: much as I love music (especially 1970s music), the gratuitous murder subplot and cocaine dominance ruined it for me. The drug component became a writer's crutch so that the protagonist can do all kinds of stupid stuff without justification.

Our Girl: it was BBC and it showed on Arte, so I thought it would be a quality product and an interesting look at women in the military. Wrong! It was a total soap opera, what with the one-note acting, convenient love triangle, repetitive dialogue and on-the-nose editing and music.

To think I put Daredevil on hold because of this...

"Undercover" currently on Beeb1 on Sunday evenings, the "delivering the best UK drama" slot, is pretty good. A compelling, if somewhat ludicrous, plot and some great performances actually compels me to sit with the fmaily and watch TV once in a while .

The Anglo-French drama The Tunnel series 2 is rather gripping. Stephen Dillane, one of the lead characters, is very good.

Is it just a rehash of the Scandinavian original or is it a different storyline?

Just finished a long documentary (it was split in about ten episodes) on Netflix - Making a murderer. Interesting things about the American justice system..a bit of an eye opener in some regards. I would recommend it.

Yes, I think you are correct with regard to the first series of the Tunnel.. but I have not seen all of the Bridge - seen the Bridge series 3 (just started to watch series 1 on Netflix, missed it when it originally aired on BBC 4).

The Tunnel series 2 could indeed have a different storyline, but not sure (?)

Re: good TV series recomendations..... ?

Second Chance
I'm torn on this one (having now finished season 1), it started off well and the premise was quite interesting (a sort of modern Frankenstein) - and then in classic US style the wheels sort of came off mid-season as they appeared to suddenly realize that the season should tie together in 11 episodes. The escalation from episode 9 was impressive - and the pace kept going very nicely - even though they plugged every potential plot hole with technology and set it up for a potential season 2 with a "flip".

It was pleasing to watch - and we didn't watch it to the end out of sympathy - and if gets renewed we'd watch it again - but I'm not going to run around the interweb suggesting you watch it.

Lucifer
Season 1 also tidied away with again a nice finish - the final line is superb - and again sets up a second season. It was another one that started well - got lost somewhere in the middle and then pulled itself to the end. For me the biggest loss as the season moved on was the "Carry on Omen" humour which added a nice touch to the earlier episodes - an humorous arrogance to Lucifer himself.

We enjoyed it - and it might be worth watching if you fancy something different - but it's not a Breaking Bad.

Next up
Queued up ready to watch are:
- House of Cards season 4
- Daredevil season 2
- Bosch season 2
- Limitless season 1
- Night Manager
- Billions season 1
