Will my netgear router work?

Hi there,

This could be a daft question. We move into our (brand new) rental accommodation in a couple of weeks' time and have to say what our phone/TV/internet preferences are. I've read the Swisscom v Cablecom thread and am still undecided but have a questions anyway.

Cabled internet on Swisscom is 125CHF with an additional 149CHF for a wireless router. I have a few netgear routers coming over on my removal wagon, will these be OK or will I need to buy one from Swisscom (maybe better if it breaks down)?

Thanks

This "wireless router" is actually a VDSL modem, next to that it likely can do wireless too (and NAT it, which is not totally routing but that is what most people call it).

As such, unless your netgear boxes also have a VDSL port, you will need it.

The modems that Swisscom delivers are pretty customizeable and one can even put most of them in so called 'bridge' mode and disable wireless if wanted so that you can hook up any equipment directly to the VDSL and use that as your NAT box instead.

We had the same situation, ended up using the swisscom box as a bridge and using our own netgear boxes for the rest.

One point we noticed that swisscom would quite often connect to our router and change the settings - enabling DHCP was one of the more annoying things they did

Re: Will my netgear router work?

same here but with only the centro picolo so bridge setting is not available but ip forwarding is. From time to time you need to on/off your wifi access point to make it work again.

You can disable the TR-69 option in the settings and for most models that Swisscom give out the wifi settings are done through their website.
