Does anyone know if a tv purchased in South AFrica will work in Basel???

A lot depends on the TV. South Africa uses the PAL standard as does Switzerland but they use different versions, South Africa uses PAL I which has a sound offset of 6 MHz, Switzerland uses PAL B/G which has a sound offset of 5.5 MHz.

What this means is that you will probably get a picture but you won't necessarily get sound unless your TV can handle both standards. Best thing to do is to check the spec, a lot of modern TVs can handle both.

It may depend on the particular tv, but the two sets that we brought over in 2005, worked perfectly, with no adjustments required.
