Re: Wireless Internet

You need to go to one of the phone providers (Swisscom, Orange etc) and ask them for a dongle / sim thing to allow you to do it, and you'll choose a package. It will be called something like "Mobile Internet for Notebooks"

The kind of rates you'll pay are

CHF7.50 per day
or between CHF19-CHF85 per month for various levels of data usage

These are the Swisscom rates, others may be better or worse

It won't be WIFI though, it will be over the mobile data network so won't be fast

Re: Wireless Internet

Great, this could be perfect. Will now use the search term dongle and take it from there... thanks!

If anyone knows of a really good rate at the moment, please feel free to chip in!!

!
Don't search for "dongle" - its a wider term than what you need.

In terms of rates, just go to the orange, swisscom and cablecom websites and dig around, you'll find it.

If its just an infrequent thing you need - its probably sensible to do a daily rate without subscription

Re: Wireless Internet

Will do that too as already done the dongle read. Seen people quoting rates of CHF 3.50 per day and that would suit me fine. Cheers

Re: Wireless Internet

you'll get a very fast speed for about an hour and after that it will be SLOWER THAN MOLASSES OUT OF A HICKORY STUMP IN JANUARY. Until the next month.

Just warning you. You may want to rethink your "oh it'd be so nice to wifi by the lake" feeling particularly if it comes with a 2 year contract.

Re: Wireless Internet

I use this pre-paid alternative, as my requirements aren't too great, and I don't need to stream a lot. Speed seems fine for my needs.

They use Sunrise.

Re: Wireless Internet

I got one of those prepaid stick things from Swisscom the other day and it costs CHF5 per 24 hours (running from the time you turn it on). It works OK and would be fine for someone who doesn't need it all the time.

Ooh, just seen this. Does that mean you can access ANY public network and not have to pay a dime?? And the range must be huge if you can get a Stafa network from Wadenswil. I presume you have to see if they are unsecured first and that is about it?

I couldnt actually work any of this out from the website in the link you sent, but I guess this is it. Seems to be a better long term deal than a standard PAYG card / contract etc. Looks better value if that is the case.

Re: Wireless Internet

Orange prepaid: 10 CHF/month for 300 MB or 2 CHF/day
Sunrise prepaid: 7.5 CHF/month for 250 MB or 1 CHF/day

If you have a smart phone with hot spot capability, you don't need a dongle.
You can just activate your phone as a hot spot. Your laptop can connect to internet via wifi through your smart phone.
