Best VoIP service?

Hi, I would like to get one of these services and use it from the phone everywhere and at home. What are the best choice?

Long time ago I had one, but I don't remember the name. It was 10€/3months of flat rate if a call to land lines in Europe, and after this time they started to take some cents from every call, but real cheap. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Re: Best VoIP service?

I use Switzernet VOIP on an Android phone with a Sunrise Data subscription.

The Android app is Media5-fone ( free ).

Switzernet costs me CHF9 a month, Sunrise CHF49 ( actually lower if a long time customer ). I have an 022 number ( Lausanne landline but in Wädenswil ZH ) that rings my Android anywhere in CH or abroad ( provided I have 3G or wifi internet connectivity ).

Switzernet offers complimentary call to several countries, landlines and mobiles as well.

As a result, I do not receive calls on my Sunrise Data SIM, but on my Switzernet number ( cheaper for everyone ).

Re: Best VoIP service?

I second the Switzernet VOIP recommendation.

Re: Best VoIP service?

It looks great.
I find very atractive the possibility of having a swiss number when you are abroad and you can answer your phone calls like if you were in CH.

Re: Best VoIP service?

Hello jrspet. I saw your EF post from a year ago about using Switzernet on an Android phone, and I wondered how it worked out. Has the quality been OK? In my experience it can be a bit patchy using VOIP over 3G, but I then I am using a very cheap phone with an old version of Android.

Now I am setting up a business, I need to find a phone arrangement which is both cheap and portable (also abroad), so I thought of doing what you have done (ie Switzernet via an Android app, and using a decent phone). My only concern is about the coverage and the quality, so I would be grateful for your feedback. Thanks.

Until recently, Switzernet has been very good. A few drop outs now and then. But in general, very good.

A few weeks ago Switzernet went down - no warning, no apologies. Apparently they were moving their service to new servers. But that did not explain the bankruptcy status in Moneyhouse. Here is the thread. Switzernet is now up and running, as stable as earlier. Hope it stays that way!

A number of people here have been using Switzernet for a while. I have two business numbers connected with Switzernet numbers. Due to the recent Switzernet down time, I picked up on another service... Sonetel. I have adjusted my telephone numbers to start off at the Sonetel number then redirect to the Switzernet numbers, voice mail or my mobile. A very interesting Voice Application comes with Sonetel and can be free.

Good luck with your decision.

Re: Best VoIP service?

Thanks! I also use Switzernet at home, and we also had some problems with it a few weeks ago, but all seems to be OK again now. I didn't know about their Moneyhouse rating - definitely something to take into account.

I'll will look into the Sonetel option - thanks for the tip.

My question is really about the sound quality and connection reliability when using VOIP on an Android app. Is the quality really good enough that you can rely on it when closing a billion dollar deal on the train - just when your train is heading into a tunnel?

By the way (nothing to do with this thread), I very much appreciated your ongoing account of your experiences with Betreibung etc.
