Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

Hi, Iīve been testin UnoDNS (UnoTelly.com) and itīs very simple to set up on PC and Apple TV, no need to install anything or unblock ATV. I am yet to try the feature that allow changes between different country servers, but other than that so far so good.

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

Use AceVPN they're good. They cost CHF 20 per month but good service overall: very technology flexible, worldwide servers, prompt support etc.

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

I built my own VPN servers (one in the US and one in Oz). Used Amazon Web Services EC2 Free Tier. So easy I could do it. Takes about 10 minutes once you are signed up.
Total cost for first 12 months is zero, nada, niente, zilch.
I used Ubuntu but you could use Windows if it tickles your fancy. Same cost.

BTW - AWS EC2 is a mind bogglingly brilliant feat of engineering

That's an admirably geeky solution! Have you got a link for how to do that?

I've looked at EC2 for a more esoteric problem - doing heavy duty statistics. Anyone can use EC2 to have the equivalent of a free PC running 24h a day. Or pay to have your very own supercomputer for long enough to do an especially greedy calculation. Cool stuff!

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

Trust me I am no geek mate, I am more a simpleton.

As requested here is link to OpenVPN solution.
http://expedienttech.net/?p=68

Super simple and easy for Windows clients. First half is about getting your ssh\putty etc going with the EC2 keys.

Second option is the native pptp solution.
http://www.64bit.co.uk/index.php/archives/223
Should support everything that does real pptp? I don't know what I am talking about though and I am happy to be corrected if I have got it wrong.

Now, that's made me sit up a bit straighter...!

How about running your own mail server off it - doable? (Bear in mind I know nothing about EC2, so if I'm way off base then nothing more than a mild singeing please )

So doable it is not funny. Assuming you are talking POP3/SNMP, I think it would take ten minutes.

You can have more than one server. You only can run one at a time though if you don't want to start paying. I might fire one up another server tonight and see.

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

Looks like you would have to get your EC2 mail server white-listed so filters and anti-spam don't block your emails.

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

Thanks for the confirmation, I'm going to have to look into this in a bit more detail. I already have a AWS account just for backing up various bits and pieces, it'd be good to get a bit more out of it.

Amazon Simple Email Service (SES) may also be an option for you.

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

After a free trial week with UnoDNS, any time I connect to Netflix the UnoDNS page pops up asking me to renew my subscription. This happens both from a laptop running Windows 7 and an ipad (using the Netflix app).
However, everything seems to work with the Netflix app on a Samsung smart tv. Perhaps a bug of UnoDNS? Any thoughts?

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

Overplay.net - quite often the SmartDNS will do it for you (gets me iPlayer without VPN).
Worthy of a sniff as it works on games consoles and (I'm sure) Apple TV....

I'm sure I can use my new PSN account and watch viaplay.dk content on my PS3 too....if I bothered to try...!

i recommend purevpn, annual subscription covers almost all countries, so you can watch tv for example from anywhere, including ipad and android apps.

I've recently been using a browser add-on called anonymox which seems to do exactly what it says on the tin. Gives a phony IP address rather than actually going via a VPN, but certainly bypasses country-based restrictions.

Works fine and is good enough for me

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

In case you are still still shopping around for a VPN service..
I've been using privateinternetaccess.com (PIA) for a few weeks now and have found it to be totally solid.
Had a couple of questions before signing up and they answered immediately via their live chat tool. Technically, they support pretty much everything, OpenVPN, IPSEC, PPTP, CC-WRT .. OpenVPN client for MAC. No logging. Cheap at 6.95usd per month or 39.95usd per year. Multiple connections supported.
Speed tests have averaged around 20m download so perfectly good for general use.

I'm not an affiliate of anything .. Blah blah blah

Another PureVPN user here. Been using it for the past two years, and am very happy with the price / performance.

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

The question is does the NSA own these services, or have a "special" relationship with them?

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

I pay a very small amount each month for a vpn without any ads.
I'm sure I could find a cheaper one, but the one I have works beautifully with VPN on/off. Connects each time and allows me to catch up with Silent Witness from the BBC, which isn't always the last thing I want to see in the evening before I go to bed.

Re: Anyone use a VPN service? Which one?

I had a horrible feeling someone would ask me that ebb.
I think it's called 'My VPN' but I'll look it up for you later.
I pay by direct debit, so it just comes out of my bank account.
I know it's very little though because if it wasn't I'd notice it each month.
