Hello!

I'm looking for the best option for a fast and affordable home internet connection in Burglauenen, about 6km from Grindelwald. My goal is 10-50Mbps for 50-70 CHF/month or so.

This morning's ringing around has turned up:
Swisscom: 2Mbps max speed for about 60/mo.
Sunrise: No promises but "certainly no faster than Swisscom"
Cablecom: No service in the area.
Green.ch: Waiting to hear back.

I'm not certain that the information I'm getting from people over the phone is really correct or the whole story, but I know not what to do about that.

Can anyone offer me some advice that will help me get a fast affordable internet connection there?

You'll be lucky to get anywhere near that with any provider. for those speeds, you need to live literally upstairs or next door to an upgraded exchange.

Besides...To be able to live somewhere as nice as Grindelwald, poor internet speeds should be mantatory as a form of compensating punishment...not that I'm jealous...

I've heard back from green.ch now. They have been the most helpful. They tell me that the copper line between my house and the exchange will support up to 3Mbps ADSL. So it sounds like I should talk to whoever can deliver that for the best price, which looks to be Sunrise.

You have to look at physical access:

Cable TV: None

Copper Wire: Any Telco provider that resells Swisscom copper access, like Swisscom, Sunrise, Green, etc. They will all be limited by the length of the phone cable

Wireless Mobile: Any 3G coverage? You need to check each providers network... Swisscom, Sunrise and Orange

Satellite: if your pockets are deep enough...!!

And thats about all your choices... you may be limited to what ADSL can offer on a copper wire connection. And you have your answer already: around 3Mbps.

Oops: I forgot one other option: The Rural DIY Network

Works like this:

• Find a friendly person with a good cable TV connection on a hilltop that can see your house.
• Fit a 2.4GHz point-to-point antenna on his roof, connected to his Internet connection, and pointed to your house.
• Fit the matching antenna on your roof, pointing at the Friendly Persons house
• Make sure he gets compensated for his efforts (with chickens, eggs, hay bales, skeins of wool, lumber, or whatever you rural country bumpkins use as barter these days )

PS: the ski field operators do a lot of this stuff to connect all their mountain top sites with each other.
