I've just switched from an iPhone to an S3 & my worst fear is happening - I simply cannot for the life of me get the phone & the Mac to see one another let alone transfer music etc.

When I first got it a week ago, I installed Easy Phone Sync & Android File transfer & initially they worked fine & I was able to transfer contacts & selected music & playlists from iTunes to the S3 onto the internal SD.

I then got a 64gb micro sd yesterday & formated it in the phone & then went to put the rest of my iTunes music library onto it & have hit a brick wall.

Here's the list of things I've tried:

Tried Connecting both as MTP & as a camera (PTP)
USB debugging is off as well.

East Phone Sync - cannot see the phone at all
Android File Transfer - cannot see the phone at all.

Kies - sees the phone after a looong wait, but then tells me the external sd doesn't have enough space (it does: 59.36gb available & my music is 42gb). I tried selecting all 4500+ songs and "transfer to device" & it uploads about 20 - 30 songs & then crashes & I have to force quit.

AirDroid - doesn't recognise the external sd.

I've tried uninstalling all these programs & re installing them one at a time as I read that they can cause probs for each other, and still the same result.
I've spent hours yesterday reading forums & following advise & instructions, still with no joy.
I've posted on Android Central forum & been ignored.

I've restarted the phone & computer numerous times, & tried all 6 usb slots on the computer & still nothing.

I presume the cable is fine as the phone sees it's connected to the computer via it & charges fine & could connect with Kies - although slowly. Could there be a problem with the cable despite this??

I am probably missing something, but really don't know what to do next & I'm very fed up. Any useful advise would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried to drag and drop, or copy and paste? This works fine for me transferring files to and from my S3.

as above, forget all the programmes, i drag and drop without any issues. Charging via the USB does take a long time also despite being 5v.

Through what platform/app though?

AFT & Easy Phone Sync can't see the phone, so I have no file window to D&D with, period.
AirDroid Doesn't let you D&D onto the ext sd.

A reloaded Kies now doesn't seem to want to connect at all anymore - it's been spinning saying connecting for about 20 mins now.

F's sake - If I have no joy by the end of the day I'm taking it back & going back to an iPhone - which is a shame, as I really, really like the Galaxy & all it's features, etc - but it's pretty bloody useless if I can't get anything onto it, isn't it?

i have had issues with USB cables before so could be that.

what happens without the 64gb card?

Tried it without the 64 card - same, same.

The cable seems to be communicating: i.e: the phone knows when it's connected to a computer via it, & it charges the phone fine, etc.
Can a cable do this, yet still be buggered for file transfer?

did you click on enable usb mass storage mode? or take out the card and put it into a card reader and copy via that.

I have a Samsung phone and had similar problems, I now just use the bluetooth connection for data transfer and I find it works pretty well.

S3 only has options to connect as a MTP or Camera PTP - looked everywhere on the phone for USB mass storage mode using instruction manual & goggled instructions from forums & it doesn't seem to exist.

I'd be really happy to be corrected on that though!

yep, i had it about a month ago, got the ding dong when connecting, would charge, but not show anything was connected. new cable and all good.

not saying its your problem but could be.

would post over on avforums if i was you or on the samsung support forums.

Why don't you just pull the card, plug that directly into the Mac and drag/drop directly?

Sleek and wireless, no, but most likely faster anyway.

Have not done that amount, the most was two and a half gigs of pictures and vids, it worked in a adequate time, just have to let it run long enough.

Been there, done that - like I stated in my OP - no joy.

could well be the card... try it in a pc and see what happens.

Mac has (had?) no/poor MTP support, so you will need to find an alternative way. e.g. wifi transfer, direct copy to sdcard.

if your mac has dual boot windows, you can try from the windows partition.

My Note shows the SD card as /sdcard/external_sd

I think the Tab we have is the same.

What is the mount point you have for your SD card? Is it mounted?

ES File Explorer is a good local file manager, is that seeing the SD partition?
