| | | which ubuntu to install on 3 1/2 yo machine
My system hard disc crashed and I need to reinstall ubuntu on my 3 1/2 yo computer.
Asus
2GB RAM
AMD 7750 Dual Core
I had Ubuntu 10.04 lucid on it and was wondering if I should install 12.04 instead or stay with 10.04.
I am worried that the newer distributions will be too heavy on this machine.
What are your thoughts on this?
Thanks.

Xubuntu is ideal for computers with limited resources (i.e. old machines), it's a compromise between functionality and performance.

From what I read, this is not necessary the case anymore.
Are you using it yourself on an older machine?

A much older Centrino based machine can run Linux Mint: http://www.englishforum.ch/sale-want...le-chf120.html
2GB RAM is OK but faster if you use another lightweight GUI ( 4GB is best for Cinnamon )

Thank you.
I think I'll need to invest in 2GB RAM anyway if I want to keep this machine running.
The new distributions keep getting heavier, I think I can't avoid this.
And I am really using it heavily. | Quote:

Hi,
I run Ubuntu 10.04 on a 6 year old laptop with 512 MB RAM. To make the installation lightweight, I had done some tweaks: disabled most of the services; changed the scheduler to anticipatory; used a lightweight, but ugly theme; turned on the laptop mode etc. The performance is bearable.
But the sad part is, 10.04 is only supported till early 2013, if I remember correctly. After that the repositories would go vanishing.
So maybe you should install 12.04 and then go on a tweaking spree. It's fun...
NB:- The minimum RAM requirement for Ubuntu is still - officially - below 512 MB.

not sure that'll be for me
From what I read, Lubuntu seems to be lightweight.

After reading this, you may wish to give Ubuntu a miss (at least the more recent versions): http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/12...buntu_spyware/ | | The following 2 users would like to thank Pacman for this useful post:

Less resource intensive than 12.04?

Both incomprehensible and off topic, surely?

Less resource intensive than 12.04? | | | | | The 12.04 is the most stable. You have optimizations there. But with the version 12.012 they introduced some new features... It's a version to test new things. I tried it and worked perfekt in my laptop. I use opera, mozilla and chrome and the whole plugins, video playback, music, flash...... really a good work for a version with many new features. http://www.howtogeek.com/127061/8-ne...antal-quetzal/ http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop |

Tom | | | | | None, it's a different version of linux, really...
What would actually made a different would be a more recent kernel, the rest is almost taste and like...

Tom | | | | | I couldn't say it so easy but the usability is improved clearly.
There're so small things:
- Wenn one application has a notification or you receive an email or there are updates the icon on the side vibrates and show some small information. Some updates come directly from the applications: skype, etc...
Perhaps these things are not so important for normal people... |
