Cutting regular SIM to Micro-SIM?

Has anyone tried this and succeeded? I see there are many tutorials that teach you how to do this surgery.

Or did you get a "professional" at one of those phone places to do it for you?

I'm afraid to mess up a) the card and b) the new phone.

They do it for free at many phone retailers, regardless of provider.

Re: Cutting regular SIM to Micro-SIM?

dnt fall for the " you need a new sim card and its 40chf" crap either... just get the old one cut down, either in a phone shop using the proper cutter or use a pair of scissors as I did.

Just an idea: maybe the IT support of the company you work for (if you work...and this is an assumption) may help you with that. They might have the proper cutter.

I will refuse to pay for a new SIM. I once lost my yallo prepaid SIM and they sent me a new one for free via registered post!

Just went down and asked. They could but they think it might destroy my sim. Apparently I have an older SIM and the copper takes up more area than the entire micro-SIM.

Curious. My motor skills usually deteriorates after beer. Maybe I should switch to wine.

Yep. IT department just showed me (photo below):
Top one is a "newer" normal SIM without detachable micro-SIM.
Middle one is my 3 year old normal SIM.
Bottom one is from my work phone with a detachable micro-SIM.

When you overlay the micro-SIM over my old one, the copper part covers a larger area. Guess I won't be cutting anything today.

go to Mobilezone and have it done for you.

The only thing you shouldn't do is cut a regular or micro-SIM into a nano and then put it into your iPhone 5. Apple keeps track of the SIM-format and is known to have denied warranty claims to customers who put in a "non-native" nano SIM.

My SIM card (from 2002 or so) was just like yours and I had it cut to micro with no problems. I also cut one myself and it worked out fine.

Got in touch with yallo and they'll send me a replacement micro-SIM for free. Thanks to all that replied!

I'm curious to see if this works. When the new card arrives, I'll trim the existing one for science.

Re: Cutting regular SIM to Micro-SIM?

Althought you already solved the problem, just in case somebody else might find him/herself in the same situation, there are also microSIM cutters that can be bought in Amazon. I bought one in amazon UK for more or less 3 GBP (free shipping, although I was living in London at that time) and I used it to cut four different SIMs. I did not get a problem with any of them afterwards.

You can have tolerance issues so be sure to cut it a bit large at first. Also the plastic adapters which adapt back to the larger size don't always work. If your new sim include the breakaway from normal to micro/nano, save it. It worked as an adapter for me, back to the larger size, when the plastic adapter wouldn't work.

http://m.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=24489 this is a printable cutting template for those who need to cut down their SIM cards. And also don't worry about cutting the copper, as all the information is stored in the middle of the chip. I used it when I received my iphone 5 and didn't have any problems.
