I previously posted that the effect you see on your decoder is due to the order of the audio tracks as broadcast by the BBC
It's not just a BBC problem, but happens the same with local TV stations (which broadcast in Dolby Digital). They don't default to NAR, cos they don't have it, but simply to the first audio track in the list, which is German. Doesn't my box know I can't understand a word of it???

NAR stands for the Narrative or Narration audio sound track, which is broadcast by the BBC for the visually impaired.

I previously posted that the effect you see on your decoder is due to the order of the audio tracks as broadcast by the BBC, and the way the decoder handles the multiple audio soundtracks.

It is something which could only be fixed by a software fix on the decoder

Note: the newer decoders do not have this problem, they do not default to the NAR soundtrack
Many thanks to FriendlyKiwi for the info - guess I could (or should) have worked out for myself that NAR had something to do with Narration, but I suspect all this aggro with Cablecom must have addled my poor brain ;-) . . . May still chase them up sometime about a software fix (or maybe a newer box), but for now I think I'll spare my nerves and just keep on hitting the "i" button.

Yes, the good folk at Cablecom really have no idea, do they: I had a phone call from them this morning wanting to send an engineer round to test my signal, as I had "reported a fault". I politely declined, suggesting instead that they should re-read my recent, detailed e-mail exchanges with their Technical Support department, including one helpful gent who had managed to confirm and reproduce the problem on his own equipment - but who was nevertheless, apparently, unaware of the simple fix you've kindly shared with your fellow-sufferers. Not sure if I'll now bother pursuing it further with Cablecom - it's still irritating to have the box (mine's the UPC Mediabox HD, by the way) defaulting back to NAR, whatever that stands for, every time I switch it off or even change channels, and I'm sure there must be a software fix they could implement if I could get them to understand the problem in the first place, but right now I don't think my nerves are up to it ;-) Thanks for your info and feedback, though - much appreciated.
Hi, Has anyone found a solution for this other than switching the audio before each new show? I have a lot of shows I record while I am not home so the manual fix will not work for me.. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: BBC1 HD on Cablecom has annoying dialogue

This problem was solved ages ago by Cablecom, although I don't know if you need a "Horizon" box to have the fix.

I have the Horizon box and the "problem" still persists. It is a real pain and drives me nuts..I have to get hold of the customer service yet another time...do other people have the same issue with the new Horizon box ?

Thanks

We record a lot of programmes, and it is possible to switch to English manually with recordings.
It's still rather annoying though.

Re: BBC1 HD on Cablecom has annoying dialogue

I used to have the "NAR" issue on the Dolby Digital channels (most of the HD ones), but for me that was fixed about 2 years ago.

I have the old Horizon box (ie not the new model with the 250Mb/s modem inside) and all my channels are starting off with the correct language settings.

After something is recorded with the NAR audio I don't find a way to switch it to the english track... If there is a way to do that that would be great. Please let me know how.

The media box i have is the newer HD recorder the modem in it.
