I believe that tab in Chrome pushed to my ChromeCast (when it comes) will be wonderful.
And how do you propose to do that?
Adrian, I believe Sean is correct here... casting a Chrome tab to the Chromecast is one of the use cases...

On the other hand, this is not a use case of the Chromecast...

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

Just to cover bases, I have one on order from Google Play US store and one from Amazon. If it doesn't trigger Cornercard fraud blocking (one of my favourite things to do!!) then I should have one from each by the end of September.

Amazon's claiming end of September and Play claims shipped by 13th.

If anyone can't wait, you can get one now for 90 francs delivered: http://www.ricardo.ch/kaufen/audio-t...v/an718435998/

what is wrong with you??! you just made me make an impulse purchase

I was already contemplating buying this off ebay, and it was coming to around 75-80CHF (incl. delivery) on that too... I wish I could snag it at the original 35USD price, but ya, I should keep dreaming...

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

Hi,

the Chromecast device that I ordered is going to be brought back by a friend so I should have it soon.

The reason why I am interested is that I sometime rent movies from Google Play, I have Google Access All Areas Music subscription and I also have a Netflix subscription so I can already make use of the device.

Once I have it I will a post a review

Have fun

Martin

I have a ChromeCast on order, should come from the US in late September. I have a perfect use case for it and that is pumping my Chrome window to the Cast.

3 months of Netflix for free might be a giggle too
Let me know if it works in CH. I haven't heard/read anything about ChromeCast working overseas...

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

Not sure I fully appreciate what Chromecast does. If I want to watch anything streamed over the internet on my HD TV at the moment I plug in my iPad running on wi-fi to the TV with and HDMI cable and adaptor to iPad.

Other than not having a cable, what's new??

Firstly the adapter to your iPad for the HDMI cable and the cable itself would have collectively cost much more than 35USD. Plus, being able to cast content to your non-smart TV without so much as getting up and no extra cables is quite a good deal I would say.

For Apple enthusiasts Apple TV is a big deal, isn't it? It can't match the Chromecast's price tag though.

What's in the box?

Let's get set up:

I see you, you see me:

We're done:

And we're watching the Flash player full screen:

I have to go now, I have Liverpool-Man U on inHD webstream quality which actually looks fine on my 46" TV. It's being cast from a Chome tab and I clicked on the full screen toggle in the Flash player. Sound and everything coming through crystal clear.

LOVE IT!!!!!

And now I'm casting from YouTube to my TV via my phone. Much better than using the built-in app.

I'd seen most of the Liverpool-Man U game but missed the goal, seen it now

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

Thanks for the pictures and the mini review! I looks like a great device. I don't just want one, I want 2!

I saw some posts earlier about Apple TV and hooking up and iPad to your TV using the HDMI adapter cable.

Apple TV is great, I have one and the usage possibilities are increasing quite rapidly over time. The new YouTube app is also fantastic, you can play content from your iPad and browse content on the iPad at the same time. You can even close your iPad cover and the content will continue to play. Playing through the app on the iPad is better than playing through the app on the Apple TV. There are many possibilities with iOS devices and Apple TV, one of the best 100 chuffs I've ever spent.

The HDMI cable adapter has an advantage if you don't want to stream the content through your home WLAN network. This could be useful in a hotel or if you have a caravan or something along those lines. While WLAN is available though, I would never go back to the HDMI cable adapter solution.

Let's see on the 10th September if Apple have moved on with their "TV content solution". Samsung have an event today as well, so keep your eyes peeled on what they're rushing out to consumers!

This space is growing at an immense rate and we'll see some serious paradigm shifts over the next 5 years.

Andy

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

I have an ATV2 which one of my friends has "borrowed" indefinitely - which is a pain because it's able to be jailbroken and run XBMC.

I also have a 2nd Cast coming from the US, I have to decide if I want to keep it or flip it. I think keep....

Do be aware that Cast needs your WLAN at home so if you're taking it to a hotel then take your WLAN and Internet (I can do this with phone or tablet as they'll "pretend" to be my home WLAN).

WiDi could be an option and I have it on my laptop but not my TV. Cast is a great middleground and I think your ideas are the limitation.....

I think the WD TV live is a much better proposition

  • USB input to play mpg, avi, mkv etc..
  • Ethernet port for super fast streaming (or wifi)
  • Media server so you can pull pictures, videos, songs etc.. off a NAS or other computer
  • Dedicated remote or smartphone/tablet for control
  • BBC iPlayer, Netflix, Youtube, Spotify + much more

CHF 90, which is probably the same cost as the Chromecast once you add shipping and tax to CH.
I had a WDTVLive which was pretty good. Although I then later replaced it with a Raspberry Pi which was also very good and did the same thing at 1/3 the price (I gave the WDTVLive to a friend).

Then I replaced the RPi with a smart TV. The RPi functionality was better than the Samsung TV, but having it built-in to the TV is simpler.

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

a bit not too relevant to chromecast.. but do you pay that bill charged for having TV by Swiss gov? when you don't watch regular TV? Just curious..

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

got mine delivered today too! from the ricardo.ch deal... everything works as expected:
- Youtube playback via Chrome and Android app
- Google Play Music playback via Android app
- Chrome tab casting (I had to reduce streaming quality to 480p to get non-choppy video)

my Windows 8 machine has an Intel i5 but I guess it isn't powerful enough for casting Chrome tabs at 720p or Extended 720p...

I don't have a Netflix or Google Play Movies subscription to test those... but I'm going to get a VPN and get the former working right away... it is free for a month after all...

oh and BTW, yayyyyyyyy :sly:
