Netflix free for 3 months with Cast
My i7 was pumping a 2.5+Mbps Flash stream to Cast no problem...........share your use case and I'll test
Ya that I knew... people are selling the 3 months free offer code on ebay for USD7.99 i.e. a normal month's cost of Netflix... I might consider taking it up after the first free month...

I was playing a video clip on dailymotion.com at 720p and was getting the choppy video quality... I cycled between the various quality options (480p, 240p etc.) on the video itself, but it didn't help... then I changed the Chromecast settings to cast at 480p (after trying Extended 720p and 720p), keeping the dailymotion stream quality at 720p and the choppiness disappeared...

a bit not too relevant to chromecast.. but do you pay that bill charged for having TV by Swiss gov? when you don't watch regular TV? Just curious..
aha a Billag question if you don't pay it and don't want to, nobody on this forum can stop you... I didn't pay it for an year, and then finally succumbed to the fear of being caught on the wrong side...

I would also like to link you to this informative post about what happens if you don't pay Billag... Do I have to get a TV licence from Billag?

They write to you, apologising for the fact Swiss TV is crap, and that they hope you will consider paying it in future once the programming improves. They then divide your bill and proportion it out over everyone else who lives in your canton.

I was running 720p (default) for the tab but I'll test extreme with an Al Jazeera HD web feed tomorrow.......

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

Love my jailbroken ATV2... but still missing some US TV - live programming. From what I am reading here, Chromecast offers less than my ATV2.

Is Slingbox my only answer for NFL/MLB live stuff? For instance, today I couldn't find a live stream of Obama's speech in Sweden. CNN or even al Jazeera would have been ok, but I don't get it from my VOIP TV or streaming options.

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

Dropping an MKV 720p file into Chrome and casting it results in flawless playback on my TV as far as I can tell. The Chrome media player in the browser doesn't handle the audio track on my files though.

A converted MP4 plays brilliantly on my TV. Flawless video and audio with almost no noticeable stuttering.

It's a 802.11g access point I'm connected to and my PC reports 240Mbps connection speed......

I faced the same choppiness by dropping a H.264 encoded AVI 720p file, until I reduced the casting frame rate to 480p... I didn't face any audio casting issues with or without choppy video... btw, my Chrome browser is using VLC player's web plugin to play these files...
my WiFi LAN is set up with 802.11n at 300Mbps...

Varun - no web plugin installed on my browser AFAIK. Try Incognito mode?

My MP4s are encoded as Mpeg4 not H.264.

oh is it... maybe even in my case it wasn't using the VLC player plugin... I assumed that I have VLC installed, and the web plugin would have taken over as soon as I tried playing the file from within the browser... I haven't given up on this yet... I'll investigate more today evening, if my baby girl let's me

btw, did you manage to get Netflix working with a VPN? I was wondering if that would even be possible as the Chromecast would have no idea about the VPN session between your PC/Mac <---> USA VPN server... even there you would need to cast a tab, which doesn't give the same user experience... will Google about this now...

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

I think I'll have to use a different device with a different Google account to try it - I have OverPlay and DD-WRT on my router so I can "appear" to be in the US to get the app.

Or maybe I'll just get the APK and try it......

I got my Netflix APK from this XDA thread (Google Play Store blocked? - GET YOUR APPS HERE! [200+ Apps]), including the Chromecast setup apk... I could have done the setup from Chrome, but this just seemed like a nicer way to do it...

I never tried to troubleshoot my choppy video issue, as I got interested with the DD-WRT hint that you threw in... I realised my router with all its niceties, doesn't have a DD-WRT or OpenWRT image (as it is a WLAN router + ADSL2 modem)... I have Cablecom so I am eventually using this router as just a router with one of the Ethernet ports configured as a WAN port, connected to the Cablecom modem which in turn is in bridge mode...

but as luck may have it with admin access to this router, I could use the iptables workaround to NAT the destination IP of the DNS queries made by the Chromecast to Google's DNS (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) to another DNS server, thereby avoiding making the Chromecast appear to be outside the USA... I signed up for the free 1-month Netflix from my Android device over a free VPN service using my PostFinance credit card, providing only a dummy USA PIN code... then I used the Netflix app to cast Netflix content directly to the Chromecast, and it worked like a charm

the DNS service I used is called Unlocator and here is How to Setup DD-WRT to Work With Chromecast

Been using it all morning on YouTube, much higher definition than my Samsung's YouTube (cr)app.

Lovely with phone too. And it can only get better....

Only one gripe and that's with Google - blocking AirCast. Boo!

I am very satisfied with it. As long as you know how to find your way around some of the limitations of using it outside the USA, you can do a lot with it. Otherwise you are restricted to Youtube and Google Play Music. Although the Chrome tab casting feature works like a charm too, so you are not missing out on anything practically.

I bought a non-smart TV on purpose, and I never wanted a gaming console in my house (I played like an addict when in school/univ. and don't want to be the same guy ever again ). So this device fills up the gap smartly for me, and very economically at that.

Re: Cool New Gadget - Google Chromecast

It doesn't work with Sky Go

The cast tab works fine, but there's no audio. Sky Go uses Silverlight, which isn't supported.

have you already purchased the device? I hope you haven't if this is your requirement... the answer to your question is all over the internet... this is the official source of the answer Cast: I am having an issue casting a tab using the Cast extension on my Chrome browser

thanks for the reply. yes I have the device and it is not so much a requirement as a desire

practically speaking why should I need to turn on my laptop when I have an ipad (or a nexus for that matter) with tons of content. I guess it will be a matter of time before this is possible.

I was playing around trying to get this to work instead of asking my trusted friend google.... I now rely exclusively on EF to get my info
